Re: Rolf's presentation at Canoecopia

Not only did man interfere with the mine shaft, but in the 80's man also introduced the parvo virus (via a boater with a dog) to the island that in essence removed 2/3 of the genetic variability in the existing wolves. While there is no way to know for sure, that change probably greatly increased th...

Re: Our first trip

Welcome to the forum! Yes you can shower at Windigo. The showers are timed and cost $6 per 5 minutes. The cost for the shower includes the use of a towel and small bar of soap. There are no storage lockers. You can check with the snack bar/gift shop, they may be able to hold things for you for a fee...

Yes, you can get it stamped in Rock Harbor. Also Windigo, and the visitors center in Houghton.

Re: Topo for Garmin

The 24K maps are pretty good. I did not buy it but did get to see one in a product demo. I decided that since I always carry the TI map as a back-up, I really did not need the 24K version for my Garmin. $130 is a bit excessive.

Re: Never Been in a Kayak Before

A basic lesson can make a world of difference. I have done a lot of kayak instruction, and the difference a few hours in the kayak can make is amazing. It would also do a lot to build your confidence which is at least half the battle. Just my 2 cents, but I would take the intro lesson.

Whoah... 510 Moose is a low number? What has it been in the past?
In excess of 2000 at one time.

Windigo showers and concessions usually open about a week after Rock Harbor. They tend to close earlier as well.

Generally they open around Memorial Day weekend. But it can be earlier or later depending on the staff the lodge has available.

Yes, the showers will be closed. They close Memorial Day Weekend. But look on the bright side, everyone else on the boat ride home will be just as smelly as you so no one will notice!

Re: IR Visitation

One of the biggest drops came a couple of years ago when the Winona was unable to make trips to the island because of low water levels in Superior. That eliminated most of the "day users" from making trips.

I was out there last May and spent some time looking for the old trail, but did not have any luck. The area is very overgrown at this point.

Re: "What are you spending your REI dividend on?" 2010 edition

Dividends come out on 3/22 (so I was told). If you go on REI's site and enter an order, your Dividend amount should come up. Don't complete the order if you don't need anything.
I just did this and it says that dividends won't be calculated until March 14.

Re: We are looking for some feedback

Great idea! It would be nice to have some alternatives to the candy bars, and any food other than dehydrated/trail food is always wonderful after a week on the island. I like your idea of the wrap sandwiches, and although I am not a vegitarian, I think that option would be important to offer for a l...
