Re: waterproof boots

I got a tube of sno-seal at campmor.com for my leather Asolo boots. Sno-seal claims that it doesn't break down as quickly as mink oil, but I haven't used mink oil before to see how effective/long-lasting it is. I'm also trying new SuperFeet inserts to replace my original footbeds. They definitely pr...

Re: Stay up to date with the IR forums! Use our RSS feeds!

I discovered the problem.
I changed the URL of the feed from:
http://isleroyaleforums.com/rss.php
to:

and now it works again.

Re: 2009 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!

DonNewcomb, We may pass you going the opposite way on the trail. My group will be staying at Chippewa on Aug 26 and staying at McCargoe or Moskey Aug 27 (still deciding whether to go for a strenuous itinerary or a more laid-back one). We were going to have 5 in our group, but one member broke his co...

Re: Stay up to date with the IR forums! Use our RSS feeds!

Hey fonix,

I've been using the forum RSS feed for months and love it.
However, something changed in the last day--I no longer get new posts in my RSS Reader (Google Reader).
Has something changed with the forums?

Thanks!

Favorite Tent Sites

Two weeks left until my first visit to IR!

My group will probably be using tent sites most of the time (unless it is raining and shelters are available). Anyone mind sharing their favorite tent sites (or shelters) at these camps?

Chippewa Harbor

McCargoe Cove

Lane Cove

Thanks!

Re: Fuel at Rock Harbor

Bob,
We fly in to CMX in the early evening and we are taking a taxi straight to Copper Harbor, so it probably won't work out to go back down to Houghton and pick up fuel there, but thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Fuel at Rock Harbor

Does anyone know how much an 8oz isobutane canister costs at the Rock Harbor store? We are flying into Houghton, MI, and since we can't bring fuel on the plane, our options are to either ship it to our hotel in Copper Harbor or buy it at Rock Harbor. I assume Rock Harbor charges a premium for fuel, ...

Re: First Trip to Isle Royale Question.

Hi Jess, My group is considering hiking from McCargoe to Lane Cove in one day when we go later this month. We are going to use Daisy Farm as our emergency stop if we get half way and don't think we can do it in a day. There is a link to the NPS trail mileage table in this post which lists the distan...

Re: cell phones

I plan on making a call from Copper Harbor on both sides of my trip, but if you want to use a SPOT messaging/tracking device without a 1- or 2-year commitment, you can rent one here for $50/week.

Compass for trail hiking

Based on the recommendations on the forums, I picked up the National Geographic Trails Illustrated map on amazon.com a few weeks ago and I am very happy with the map. Good scale and it has a nice water-resistant coating on it. If we are only doing trail hiking, is there a need for a compass? I just ...

Re: Forum Calendar?

Thanks, Tom and fonix.

I'll stick to looking through the Trip Log thread.
I wonder how feasible it is to use an external calendar like Google or Yahoo--create a new public calendar that could be linked from the forums?

Forum Calendar?

Hey fonix,

Do you know if phpBB supports a calendar feature? I thought it would be cool if people could post their trip dates to a calendar so you could see who you might run into along the trail.

Keep up the good work. These forums are a great planning resource!

Re: Itinerary Help - 4 nights from RH

Thanks for the helpful feedback. It looks like the hike from Chippewa to McCargoe is going to be the hardest day. I figure that if we can't make it all the way to McCargoe, we'd stop at West Chickenbone instead--although that may require us to skip Lane Cove at the end :( Can anyone give a rough tim...
