The post originated in 2010 but has been updated several times as appropriate. Those are the current regulations and they have not changed in years.

Re: More on Algae blooms

I contacted the lead researcher on this study and inquired about which lakes were being monitored. Here is his response... Thanks for your interest in our work. This appearance of cyanobacterial blooms on ISRO is a real puzzle for us. Our monitoring work is targeting 8 lakes that capture the gradien...

Re: TR 9/5-9/11 2017 Windigo to Rock Harbor

Great trip report! Hope you make it back to Isle Royale at least one more time. I hiked the western section of the Minong two weeks ago and can attest to the challenges the beaver dams present. At the two beaver dams just east of the Minong Overlook, I had to walk the top ridge of the dams, and ther...

Re: Duncan Bay Narrows from Lookout Louise

On the National Geographic map, campsites that don't have trail access are typically accessed only by water. The northwest side of the Greenstone Ridge in the vicinity of Lookout Louise is mostly cliffs. This is a typical geological feature for all the ridges on Isle Royale, the southeast facing slo...

Re: 7/7/2017 – 7/15/2017 [Windigo to Rock Harbor]

Always interesting to hear the details of Isle Royale trips. Thanks for writing. Temps of 30's and 40's in July! That is why I always bring my long underwear and down sweater (doubles as a pillow), even in the summer.

Re: Campground in Grand Portage

In Sept. 2016, the Grand Portage Casino told me that the recently installed cell service in Grand Portage is AT&T. My T-Mobile phone did not work, and would not roam to AT&T.

Re: Water shoes for lakes?

I bring water shoes to protect my feet from cuts and abrasions in rocky areas. My feet are my ticket to an enjoyable backpacking trip, and I like to keep them in good conditon. I also use the water shoes as a general purpose camp shoe, and give my barking dogs a rest from the hiking boots at the end...

Great trip report. Good rain gear (jacket and pants) and a backpack cover are essential on Isle Royale even in the summertime! Sounds like you made the right decision to depart the island early, considering your wet gear and the cool weather.

The 2017 Greenstone Newspaper, Page 6, Campgrounds Table, has a special information column that indicates if fires are allowed or if community fire rings are present.

One hiking pole. Three legs are better than two.

More for stability than anything else.

It has kept me from falling more than once.
