Re: New Cabins in Windigo
It doesn't look like there are any boat rentals out of Windigo. I know the concessionaire has in the past (looked like they had 2 in 2011), but doesn't advertize this on their web page. Has this changed? I was going by what I saw on the Lodge's website, no listing for Windigo. Being able to rent a ...

Re: New Cabins in Windigo
As the link in Tampico's post says, these cabins are based on the Michigan State Park system cabin design and have electricity. I've stayed in one of these cabins at Fort Wilkins near Copper Harbor. They have two bedrooms with bunks and a futon sofa bed in the main room. The bedrooms don't have door...

Re: Ranger III 1st trip
This morning, I found a website that maps the current location of vessels on Lake Superior, including the Ranger III. At this moment (6:25 a.m. CDT, 5/8/13), it is docked at Mott Island.

Re: Winter Weather Conditions on the Island
Can someone provide a link to current satellite photos of Isle Royale? Through Google or Bing maps (and some online weather services) all I see are leaf-on imagery. The satellite photos I can find are of such poor resolution, it's hard to judge conditions on the island.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Brockway Mtn for sale - donate to keep it public
Update: I learned Tuesday that Eagle Harbor was successful in purchasing Brockway Mountain. They will make good stewards.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen.

Twenty minutes away - I'll be there. Lots of stuff for the camper and the paddler.
Maybe Greg will have something definite on sequestration and IR.

Re: "Sequester" impact for Isle Royale
Without trying to get too political, I find it a bit strange that everywhere I look in the federal budget (not just ISRONP), the proposed or announced sequestration cuts are generally from front line costs where they are most visible (read most painful) to the public or user of services. Could be t...

Re: New Park Regulations for Food Storage
There's an "Ursack" made of "bullet proof" fabric (Kevlar or "spectra" fabric) that's advertised as bear proof. http://ursack.com/ It only weighs 7.3 oz. On Isle Royale, it could just be left on the ground with a rope securing it to something so a curious fox doesn't dr...

Re: W.Chickenbone to Todd Harbor and back to W.C. loop in a
The Minong Ridge Trail between Todd Harbor and McCargoe Cove is not the most challenging part but it is a bit tough. I wouldn't bet on the shelter at Todd Harbor, but you might get one at McCargoe. If you don't, the hike from McCargoe to W. Chickenbone is easy going.

Re: Bushwacking From Lookout Louise to Blake Point
I got permission for a night of backcountry camping beyond Lookout Louise a few years ago. It was far from the most rewarding off-trail hike I've had on IR. Dense old woods, rough terrain, no views, little to recommend it in my mind. I slept in my hammock but there weren't many (any?) spots to put a...

Re: Rock Harbor to Scoville Point trail
I agree with Ingo - it's a great hike and not challenging - something for the last day of your trip, maybe.
There are some private residences here and there on the island, one near Scoville Point.

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?
I, too, love the view from the bluff above Chippewa Harbor campsite. I've heard you can even get cell phone reception up there. The view from Mt. Franklin is breathtaking and less obstructed by trees than CH, but it's only a view of the north side of the island and Canada. For a hiker coming to or f...

Re: Portable Weather Radio Signal
Last September I met some folks in Rock Harbor who had a very small multiband radio. They couldn't get anything on the weather band, but got multiple FM and I think AM stations at various points around RH and the Greenstone. If you understand French, your chance of understanding a weather forecast f...

Re: Water filter system query
I took an MSR Gravity Flow system on my last trip. It's heavy for solo use, but I liked that the water bag was easy to fill from open water and holds more than 4 liters of water. I was able to attach a shower nozzle for occassional brisk showers. I bought a Sawyer System for a trip to Mexico last mo...

Thank you! Very nice list. Some others to add without recommendation - I've only browsed: The Boilerworks http://www.theboilerwerks.com/ - makes "the first lightweight chimney kettle" Suluk 46 http://www.suluk46.com/index.html - various gear for the ultralite backpacker. Also offers small ...
