Re: Water Taxi Cost Efficiency

Interesting chart. The costs are unrelated to whether they have to venture into the open waters of Lake Superior.

And, I didn't know they'd take you as far as Malone Bay or McCargoe Cove. How long do those trips take!?

Re: The Top 3 Best and Worst Campgrounds (Trail Accessible O

Those of you who've mentioned Chippewa Harbor - I don't know what you're thinking! It's the worst campsite - always has the worst bugs, always noisy with the water skiers going up and down the harbor and planes constantly flying overhead, and it has lousy TV reception. I'd suggest everyone stay away...

Re: Why do you go backpacking?

Great question! Backpacking puts me entirely in the moment, surrounded by the most beautiful parts of this world. Like Greg, it frees my spirit. It's just me, the weather, the trail and the others sharing this experience. There aren't many places where all you hear is the wind and the call of the bi...

They're definitely working out the kinks. I followed one link at got HTML. I don't speak HTML. I'm sure they're working on it.

Re: Message Body Box Issues

fonixmunkee, my issue was different from Rafiki's. Yesterday, I was able to recreate it, but didn't have time to respond here. It's not a problem, just an unexpected change in the way the message entry box works. When I quoted someone, then entered my comments and reached the bottom of the message w...

Re: Anyone headed to the island the second week of May?

(April fools! - no, for real) You can actually get a cab from Copper Harbor to Houghton at a not too unreasonable price (good luck making the phone call, though). Don't know much about going by way of Grand Portage, but have read some threads here about a shuttle service from Duluth to GP. Houghton ...

Ditto on the thanks, Mike. The forum is a great site now, so you must have planted good seeds. And thanks to all the current and other past moderators for their great work.

Re: Permethrin???

Keep in mind that permethrin is an insecticide, not a repellant. On your clothing, it kills mosquitoes and ticks that land on your treated clothing, but it doesn't keep them off or stop them from biting exposed skin. It just reduces the population around you.

Re: Anyone interested in creating a resource website?

Sounds neat but what do you mean by a resource website? What do you see for it that couldn't go here or isn't already on the IRNP website? The moderators here add links in their "information" posts to various resources.

Are you going out from Grand Portage? How do you plan on getting from Copper Harbor to GP? It's a long walk. :)

Re: Solo Trip in May

I usually hike solo, pre and post season and I love it for all the good reasons already stated. Hiking the Minong from McCargo Cove to Windigo in October, I didn't see anyone for the entire four days except a helicopter over Lake Desor North. Going in May, you won't have too much "night" t...

Leftovers, the limit on a reply is 60,000 characters. If you are hitting that, please make sure you aren't retyping the Encyclopedia Britannica into the message box :) I wasn't close to typing an encyclopedia - I don't know enough words even if I repeat them a lot. :D Maybe the moon was full.
