Re: Thunder Bay (YQT) as Entry Point
The Lodge and Casino offer free bus rides to and from Thunder Bay to promote gambling. According to their website the bus pickup point is "close to the airport." If you were planning on spending night at the Lodge, maybe this can work for you. You then look around the Lodge for someone els...

Windigo cabin available for rental in Sept
A week ago, I canceled our reservation for a Windigo Cabin, Sept. 9-16, the last week they're available. You might be able to book it during that time. Enjoy.
I have changed the original message so now Ingo's and Hooky's messages seem out of place, but I thank you both.

Re: What's the difference between email and "private message" to contact a forum member
Thank you. I think I should spend some time reading the FAQs (faq.php). I would have found the answer there.

What's the difference between email and "private message" to contact a forum member
I want to ask a member question. What's the difference between the two choices: "Email address: send email to 'member'" or "PM: send private message"?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Blades in the IR bush
I love my Swiss Army Knife, had it for years. I probably use the scissors most, the tweezers second.

Re: Website for buying and selling used camping equipment?
Thanks Drobarge for the info on the Gear Trade website. Do you have any experience buying or selling on it? And, Tree Rattt, interesting suggestion. Actually, I have a Kelty Tioga in excellent shape - I could use it as a model. The full story - I love the comfort and fit of the Tioga. It's been perf...

Website for buying and selling used camping equipment?
I'd like to buy a Kelty Tioga backpack. The frame is what I most want. Does anyone know of a website where people buy and sell used camping equipment? I've been watching Craig's List(s) for most of Wisconsin and haven't seen many at a price I wanted to pay (for some, I just never got replies). Thanks.

Re: Rangers with guns
I was surprised to see a ranger with a gun a few years ago, too, and asked about it. They are considered customs agents/border guards since people come from Canada as well as U.S. With 9/11, they now carry guns.

Re: Houghton hotel
I've stayed at the Super 8 three times this year (total of 6 days) and was generally pleased. The last time, August, there was no HBO and they said they tried to get it fixed earlier in the summer but couldn't. The pool (and sauna) was also closed the last two days the first time I was there this ye...

Re: 3yr old hiking?
Isle Royale is a wilderness park. I agree with Tampico. I saw this thread in May and just checked back to see if there were any other comments. Your son may be a hearty soul, but what if you run into 4 days of rain (not at all impossible)? You can't stay more than one night before moving to the nex...

Re: Ranger Fall Trips?
Hi Mike, I asked about these late season trips when I was there in June. They said they would make a decision around the beginning of August. When I was in Houghton the first week of August, I stopped in and asked and they said there wouldn't be any available for paying passengers. I didn't ask why ...

Re: Favorite Mountain House meals
I'll spruce things up with some shavings from bacon bars ... What's a bacon bar? Back in the Colin Fletcher, The Complete Walker days you could get bacon bars from Wilson's Meats, I think it was, through sporting goods stores. Where do you buy them? As to freeze drying at home, I haven't tried it b...

Re: Eggs in the backcountry
I've repackaged Mountain House freeze-dried eggs from their #10 cans. It was OK but there were some problems. First, even though I repackaged right before the trip, they just didn't seem as good. Another thing was making sure the ingredients were evenly distributed (I did eggs and bacon). I was very...
