Re: TD vs. LTH

Todd is also my favorite CG. There's no dock at Little Todd so there's none of the "luxuries" of Todd. Still Little Todd is a favorite among many others due to more solitude I suspect. At Todd there is a nice water fall visible from the water, less than 1/2 mile SW of the CG. I've never been but ...

Re: New Food Storage Guidelines in Effect

It’s really not about hanging food. Wolfs are going though the trash at RH. Running off with packs only set in the ground for a few minutes. Wolves are smart. They can assess risk. And their assessment say there is no risk to being around human or running around their campgrounds or going through t ...

Re: New Food Storage Guidelines in Effect

If people had more common sense and would have been hanging food bags as best practice this would be less an issue I feel. I'm not necessarily disagreeing but I think there is a variety of other factors. The foundation of my rationale lies in the experience of the 50 previous years during which ...

Re: New Food Storage Guidelines in Effect

The news release included a statement that the Park has been doing some hazing of wolves approaching populated areas, but does not include any instructions for or how campers should react should a hungry wolf start acting like a campground fox or potentially more aggressive. Maybe it should borrow ...

Re: New Food Storage Guidelines in Effect

Those are very substantial changes, effective immediately. Most people already in the transportation pipeline will not be able to completely comply.

Re: Impossible logistics

If the one night at Three Mile Campground becomes part of your solution, not yet mentioned is the RH Lodge (if open) will store gear for a modest fee. No food or fuel allowed.

Re: Aurora Borealis

I think I am cursed when it comes to the Aurora. I only ever saw them once when I lived in the UP. Last night, my neighbors all claimed they could see the lights, but standing outside with a clear sky I couldn't find a thing! Next time (whenever that is), take a picture towards the north and see ...

I'm assuming it wasn't there 5 minutes later at the next refresh?

Re: Itinerary Feedback

I really like Kelly's suggestion of orienting the departure location to Chippewa Harbor - has anyone successfully amended their tickets after purchasing? Just give the boat folks a call. So long as there's availability (and there will be if the same day) it's no problem. Perhaps a nominal change ...

Re: Itinerary Feedback

First reaction is, it's a strenuous itinerary for a group with limited overnight experience & without much overnight/fullpack experience. It's a common suggestion to build in a "zero" day to accommodate any number of unforeseen situations including weather. Plan it more towards the end so you don't ...

Re: Webcam Feedback

The BLUE sky at NIGHT was my biggest WTH moment when the latest cameras were installed. Who new at full moon with fairly clear skies, the normal blue tint would appear? I love new the much higher sensitivity. I already know what EVERYTHING looks like in the dark, but the ability to SEE in the dark ...

Re: Trip Planning: Itinerary Help

By all means, try to get up to the Greenstone Ridge, especially if the weather is clear. The panoramic views are spectacular. The hike from Daisy Farm to Three Mile along the Greenstone Ridge (via Mt. Ojibway & Mt. Franklin) is not much greater in distance (only 0.7 mile) since the route is ...

Re: Trip Planning: Itinerary Help

There's a good chance you won't score a shelter and a lesser chance you might need to share a tent site, but even with the newly found popularity of The Island, June should not be nearly as crowded as the later Summer months. There will also be folks staying at Three Mile CG that night who are ...
