Re: TR 9/5-9/11 2017 Windigo to Rock Harbor

He came back later and was telling me he left Windigo and came along the Minong climbing over beaver dams, going into 4' of water and getting turned around. He carried a GPS and was a experienced hiker but had nothing good to say about that section. I hiked the western section of the Minong two wee...

Re: TR: 1Sept-6Sept [RH to Windigo to RH]

Just my opinion, but the totally waterproof nature of the glove added to (or probably was responsible for) the water logging of the skin on your hands and fingers. All perspiration and moisture from outside is trapped and has only one place to go, into your skin.

Re: TR: 1Sept-6Sept [RH to Windigo to RH]

Those are some heavily saturated feet and hands. Were you wearing nitrile gloves? At least you have some nice weather during daylight hours.

Re: Hidden Lake to Lane Cove

It would be nice to see Lookout Louise and Monument Rock but keep in mind the total hiking distance via that route will be about 1.5 miles longer than hiking from Rock Harbor. Plus you will have whatever additional delays the boat trip creates.

Re: Hidden Lake to Lane Cove

A first night at Lane Cove CG is fairly popular. The Queen arrive around Noon so even this late in the season when hiking hours become shorter, this goal is reasonable from Rock Harbor. I am confused about your reference to Hidden Lake. What are you plans or expectations regarding Hidden Lake?

Re: Superior no longer clearest Great Lake

Superior isn't losing ground per se. 1) Michigan and Huron are improving due to a reduction in agriculture run off. They both have a level of agriculture run off that that the Superior drainage basin has never seen so this factor is just getting them back to where they used to be along side Superior...

What's that saying?

You can have light.
You can have it inexpensive.
You can have it durable.

Pick two.

Re: Algae Bloom Water Warning In Effect for Lake Ritchie

Everything I've read about blooms would indicate that not a lot is known for sure regarding their life cycle. They can disappear fairly quickly in some cases. Their cause seems to be blamed primarily on temperature, nutrient availability and the water flow or movement (or lack thereof). Man made nut...

Re: Good Article on The America

Thanks John, After reading about The America I noticed an older article at the same magazine's website reflecting on the history of the Isle Royale Queen. The interesting factoid I just learned was that the predecessor to the Isle Royale Queen family (I, II III and now IV) was a boat named the Coppe...

Re: September trip

You might want to look into the camper cabins in Windigo. They are open until Saturday the 16th of September. The Rock Harbor Lodge and Windigo cabins are open for an extra week this year. I'm not sure about the other concession amenities but I would guess the store is open till the 16th as well. Wh...

Algae Bloom Water Warning In Effect for Lake Ritchie and Chickenbone Lake

There is an algae bloom alert presently in effect for all of Lake Ritchie. Do not drink the water or use it for cooking. No amount of filtering, boiling or purification can make it safe to drink. It is very harmful to ingest.

Chickenbone Lake has been added to the list of affected lakes.

Re: Monarch Shipwreck

I thought the wreckage was all submerged at a depth of 10 to 65 feet. Any remnants of a wood structure on that rocky shoreline would surely have disappeared many years ago. Getting to the shoreline would not reveal anything. It's theoretically possible to get there given the survivors all hiked out ...
