Re: Moosewatch Expedtions

The link to their detailed description is a bit hard to find.

WHAT IS A MOOSEWATCH EXPEDITION?

They also have a similar program dedicated to college internships.

Re: Map

It shows some interesting history. For example, Lane Cove campground is in the "old" position and the older Windigo to Feldtmann Lake trail that goes through the swamp is shown.

Re: Map

I think the map you refer to is called "Points of Interest - Isle Royale National Park. I have not seen it for sale today. Here is a scanned copy of the one I have from 1977

Re: Ranger III Special Rate

This is actually more in response to your post in the Trip Reports section but is more appropriate to place it here. Without getting into exact rates, the cost to take the Voyageur from Windigo to Rock Harbor (or vice versa) is just slightly less than a one way rate from either Michigan departure po...

Re: Windigo Cabins

The cabins are operated by the same concessionaires that run the Rock Harbor Lodge, stores, marina, water taxi etc. Information and pictures can be found on their website here. I do not recall any trip reports that include a lot of details for those that spent nights in the cabin, but they have been...

Re: Executive Summary of NPS study of Lynx reintroduction

NPS management seem to be much more open to Lynx reintroduction than they have been to Wolf preservation.

Re: Kinsman Indpendant runs aground off Isle Royale

You had me going John, until I saw the date. Even so, that was quite recent. The Kinsman Independent was heading to Thunder Bay. My theory is the inexperienced Third Mate at the helm mistook the Menagerie Island for the Passage Island Lighthouse. That is a great quote, "A blind person with a white c...

Re: trail runners?

I don’t understand this whole argument. What exactly is Jim complaining about, that people don’t follow HIS rules? Would he prefer to impose a speed limit? What would that limit be? The NPS limits the levels of technology can be utilized on Isle Royale. For other federal and public lands the rules a...

Re: Last minute October trip to IR

All of the four commercial carriers have ceased operations for the year. Private boat or charter are your options. I know of at least one fishing charter that makes runs to The Island. I'm sure they (or someone similar) would be very expensive, several hundred dollars per day and that's assuming the...

Re: Trouble with Inreach SE and Explorer SOS switch

Thanks for the heads up John. I checked mine and the SOS interlock switch is still operative. The interlock switch appears to be just a locking tab made from plastic that slides into and interrupts the SOS electrical switch, keeping a press from completing the electrical circuit. If that single prot...

Otherwise known as the Canadian Jay, they can be as bold and as mischievous as the squirrels and fox on the Island.

Re: Sylvania Wilderness

The whole Ottawa National Forest area is beautiful. Sylvania's popularity has increased quite a bit over the past few years. I know the Sylvania Wilderness area requires reservations (May 15-Sept 30) for all the campsites and they can be made up to 6 months in advance. Don't forget your fishing tack...

Very nice trip and report. Thank you for taking the time to share. For the record, Lake Desor (and Hatchet Lake) are considered void of any game fish, although there have been anecdotal reports of some successes.

Re: TR 9-8 to 9-16 2017 Rock Harbor to Windigo with kayking and back.

What a fantastic trip. Thank you for the nice report. I especially liked the unconventional aspects of your combined paddling and hiking. I applaud your good sense to pay attention to your risk assessment regarding Blake's Point. I can't believe the Rock Harbor Lodge was almost "full up". They must ...
