Re: trail runners?

I don’t understand this whole argument. What exactly is Jim complaining about, that people don’t follow HIS rules? Would he prefer to impose a speed limit? What would that limit be? The NPS limits the levels of technology can be utilized on Isle Royale. For other federal and public lands the rules a...

Re: Last minute October trip to IR

All of the four commercial carriers have ceased operations for the year. Private boat or charter are your options. I know of at least one fishing charter that makes runs to The Island. I'm sure they (or someone similar) would be very expensive, several hundred dollars per day and that's assuming the...

Re: Trouble with Inreach SE and Explorer SOS switch

Thanks for the heads up John. I checked mine and the SOS interlock switch is still operative. The interlock switch appears to be just a locking tab made from plastic that slides into and interrupts the SOS electrical switch, keeping a press from completing the electrical circuit. If that single prot...

Otherwise known as the Canadian Jay, they can be as bold and as mischievous as the squirrels and fox on the Island.

Re: Sylvania Wilderness

The whole Ottawa National Forest area is beautiful. Sylvania's popularity has increased quite a bit over the past few years. I know the Sylvania Wilderness area requires reservations (May 15-Sept 30) for all the campsites and they can be made up to 6 months in advance. Don't forget your fishing tack...

Very nice trip and report. Thank you for taking the time to share. For the record, Lake Desor (and Hatchet Lake) are considered void of any game fish, although there have been anecdotal reports of some successes.

Re: TR 9-8 to 9-16 2017 Rock Harbor to Windigo with kayking and back.

What a fantastic trip. Thank you for the nice report. I especially liked the unconventional aspects of your combined paddling and hiking. I applaud your good sense to pay attention to your risk assessment regarding Blake's Point. I can't believe the Rock Harbor Lodge was almost "full up". They must ...

Re: TR 9/5-9/11 2017 Windigo to Rock Harbor

He came back later and was telling me he left Windigo and came along the Minong climbing over beaver dams, going into 4' of water and getting turned around. He carried a GPS and was a experienced hiker but had nothing good to say about that section. I hiked the western section of the Minong two wee...

Re: TR: 1Sept-6Sept 2017 [RH to Windigo to RH]

Just my opinion, but the totally waterproof nature of the glove added to (or probably was responsible for) the water logging of the skin on your hands and fingers. All perspiration and moisture from outside is trapped and has only one place to go, into your skin.

Those are some heavily saturated feet and hands. Were you wearing nitrile gloves? At least you have some nice weather during daylight hours.

Re: Hidden Lake to Lane Cove

It would be nice to see Lookout Louise and Monument Rock but keep in mind the total hiking distance via that route will be about 1.5 miles longer than hiking from Rock Harbor. Plus you will have whatever additional delays the boat trip creates.

Re: Hidden Lake to Lane Cove

A first night at Lane Cove CG is fairly popular. The Queen arrive around Noon so even this late in the season when hiking hours become shorter, this goal is reasonable from Rock Harbor. I am confused about your reference to Hidden Lake. What are you plans or expectations regarding Hidden Lake?

Re: Superior no longer clearest Great Lake

Superior isn't losing ground per se. 1) Michigan and Huron are improving due to a reduction in agriculture run off. They both have a level of agriculture run off that that the Superior drainage basin has never seen so this factor is just getting them back to where they used to be along side Superior...
