Re: BUGS!

This concentrate is much more economical. Dilute it 19 to 1 for the same 0.5% solution sold in the spray containers. I just put some mixed solution in a bucket and dump the clothes in. Make sure you wear latex or nitrile gloves. Don't get any solution on your skin and rinse thoroughly if you do. Get...

Re: Flash floods and washouts in Houghton/Hancock area

Per local facebook friends, Airport Road is also washed out (the uphill stretch coming out of Dollar Bay). Coal Dock Road is a possibility or just walk to Ripley from Hancock. It's not too far (less than a mile). Crossing the washout couldn't be worse than a beaver dam, I guess? Stay safe everyone....

Re: Flash floods and washouts in Houghton/Hancock area

There is some terrible damage due to flash flooding in Houghton County. Fortunately it appears no loss of life or serious injuries. The Pilgrim River bridge on U.S. 41 is closed so Johnhen's earlier suggestion to cut west at Baraga on M38 to M26 is the way to go. Normally I would take county roads n...

Re: NPS officially moving forward with introducing new wolves to IRNP

Reading "hopefully wheels will turn quickly" when reading about the government doing something, made me laugh out loud   I went to the Optimist Club that day  . The more realistic part me is thinking fall 2019. The NPS has only approved the decision . Are we sure there won't be anot...

Re: TR 6/18: RH; CH-McCC-RH

There is a variety of speculation as to why the mining ceased. From climate change to catastrophic genocidal wars to the easy float copper running out. Maybe they had all the tools and dinnerware sets they needed. Be careful of your Google searches as there are some pseudo-scholars out there that pu...

Re: Where to stay?

We had a cow moose leisurely stroll through our tent campsite at the Rock Harbor campground. We saw her coming, backed out of the way and she just kept coming. Keep in mind that moose have terrible eyesight but an excellent sense of smell and hearing. If you have a choice of which general direction ...

Re: TR 6/18: RH; CH-McCC-RH

What a great read and trip, even for Mr. T. I did a similar trip in 2013, “base camping” from the Lodge. Based on Mr. T’s appreciation for the Pre-Cambrian igneous and metamorphic geology of North America, has he studied or interested in the effects of the Keweenaw Rift that almost split the contine...

Re: BUGS!

Ditto to all comments. Also, black flies are more attracted to darker colors so go with the light shades. They seem to swarm like a massive flock of migrating Starlings but don't get paranoid. They can be swarming in one place and nowhere to be seen in another place close by....usually....until they...

Re: Chippewa Harbor or Moskey Basin

Unless your group is 7 or more, your itinerary is not set in stone. You are free to change it on a daily basis. I say play it day by day. You pass right by Lake Ritchie on your way to Moskey Basin. Stop and look around the campsites. Personally I prefer campgrounds on Lake Superior because of the co...

Re: Boat options from Grand Portage to Rock Harbor

You can book a charter boat for a fishing expedition but I almost certainly doubt they are allowed to simply ferry you to/from Rock Harbor Lodge. Commercial enterprises are strictly controlled by the federal government (NPS and Coast Guard) and they are licenced for specific purposes. Plus it would ...

Re: Chippewa Harbor or Moskey Basin

The hike from Ritchie to Moskey (and back the next day) is really not that bad (it can be a canoe portage) and the extra time is worth the camp, IMHO. I totally agree Tom. The 2.5 miles from Mosky to Ritchie is pretty flat and quite easy by Island standards, especially given it's location. But it y...

I use Acme Mapper in Topo mode.
Thanks for the online mapper. I used to use one but it's not as good as Acme.
I notice the topo map loaded is showing 2 Feldtman trails. The Eastern one was abandoned quite some time ago. I'm sure most of it is under water now as that area had many boardwalks.

Definitely strawberry, Ingo. No contest!

As far as choosing a campground, the above posts layout your choices very well, if anything matches your tastes. Otherwise flip a coin as you can't go wrong either way.

The fishing was indeed, great. I would definitely go back more prepared for a longer stay.
What species of fish were you catching?

Re: First time to Isle Royale

One more question, I've read a little about "backcountry camping" on the island and i'm a little confused by what people are saying in some of the threads.. Are the campsites I'm hiking to not backcountry campsites? Or is the backcountry camping referring to going off the trail and setting up camp ...
