Re: May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th

Blue skies have returned long enough to charge the web cam batteries, clearly showing Winter is still present.

Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

The author of the original comment referenced was indeed ignorant while I characterized it as crude. But he still inadvertently predicted the same result that the newly introduced 20 wolves and their offspring will also, almost certainly, become extirpated once again by the isolation of the Island i...

Re: Opening Day Weather

Winter camping on The Island sounds exciting. . . . if I were 30 years younger. We used to winter camp in the Keweenaw when I was 20 something. It was interesting for the very few times I did it except for the fact it seemed like almost all the effort and energy was spent trying to stay alive. I thi...

Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

I saw one comment on wasting tax dollars claiming that the island couldn't support 20 wolves and they'd kill each other off. There is actually some inadvertent truth in that statement (although not in the crude manner the author probably suggested). The Island once had as many as 50 wolves and ulti...

Re: Fishing/Hiking w/9 year old son

All great ideas from Ingo. I will add that the canoe rentals are also available for starting in Tobin Harbor as well (no portaging over needed). This gives paddling access to all of Tobin Harbor, which is generally more shielded from the weather than is Rock Harbor Channel. Also gives easy access to...

Does anyone have access to the other 99 trails that are listed. If so could you post the link here?
Scroll to the bottom of the backpacker.com article. There is a link there.

Below is a picture of Daisy Farm from a 1963 postcard. Daisy Farm 1963 Postcard CROPPED.jpg Things have changed a lot in terms of fires (and a lot of other things). The text below is in the rules section of the 1953 park brochure: "Keep your camp clean. Whenever possible burn garbage in your campfi...

Yes, the cabin was just to the left as you walked off the dock. A ranger lived there. That was back when it was on an open field of .... grass and Daisy's

The one in figure 22 is what I remember. It must have been 1975. I also remember a water faucet at Daisy Farm during the same time period.

Re: Shelters

There actually used to be a shelter at either Hatchet or South Desor. I remember it from the early 70's. It was much more primitive, made from whole logs with chinking, open front (no screens), shake roof and dirt floor. It was maybe half the size of those today.

Re: Light and Cheap, under $20

35 mm film canisters are great for storing and protecting all sorts of very small or fragile things or even small quantities of liquid. For insurance I tape the lid on with a few inches of duct tape. They only weigh a couple of grams. They are still available for about 50 cents a piece. These things...

Re: Gear/Tips for fishing Isle Royale

Both Hatchet Lake and Lake Desor are officially classified by the NPS as being void of any game fish although there have been very few anecdotal reports disputing this. There are are more reports though of people coming up empty from them. Chickenbone should be good though. Try the weedy shallows at...

Re: Vegetation on Island in Early June?

We are planning to go to the island May 31st through June 4th and were curious if the deciduous trees are usually leafed out by then. I know a lot of that would depend on the weather. I have also heard the wildflowers are the best in June. Would we be too early in June to see them? Your schedule is...

Re: First Timer's Gear List

I might be premature in bringing this up since you haven't mentioned weights and your food and toiletry items are still listed at 0 weight, or possibly the lighterpack website does not work properly for me, but several of the items I checked, for which you do have weights, listed seem quite light. E...
