Re: Has anyone ever got a kayak or canoe into Sargent Lake?

I know johnhens and porter have both visited Sargent Lake and have written about it here. John caught some Northern there. Getting a paddle craft in and out is of course the question. Reading their accounts may give you some enlightenment.

Re: First time to IR, looking for trip tips out of rock Harbour

One additional scheduling difference to point out is during July, the Queen offers transportation to/from the Island 6 days a week while the Ranger is only 2 times per week. But if you're schedule does not require that additional flexibility, then in light of all the other pros and cons stated, eith...

Re: 1st Trip to Isle Royale

Eagle Claw makes excellent backpacking spinning rods. They breakdown into 4 or more sections but still have good action and are reliable. I've had an older model for decades.

Re: 1st Trip to Isle Royale

I'll add some points regarding fishing and swimming. Lake Desor is officially void of any sport fish although there have been a couple of anecdotal contradictions to this. Feldtmann should be good for Northern Pike and maybe some pan fish. Make sure your fishermen pay attention to inland lake rules ...

Re: First Time, Feldtmann Loop, Early August

When you first arrive in Windigo, check with the Ranger there. They might have recent reports of water shortages (or not) at Island Mine or at least give you an estimate based on older reports and recent rainfall knowledge.

Re: Best cell signal at West end of island?

A check of their website coverage data maps (plus T-Mobile) show that Verizon's and Sprint's coverage pretty much ends around Grand Marais. Both AT&T and T-Mobile indicate good data coverage in and around Grand Portage and AT&T claims data coverage to the southwest end of The Island. T-Mobile is kno...

Re: Water Taxi Transit Times?

I am sure no timetable exists, as in a departure arrival timetable you might find for bus, train, or ferry service. You might call to see if they will give an approximate transit time with some upper and lower values. They can be hard to reach this time of year but I also suspect the "Winter" person...

I love how the clouds in many of these pictures makes it so clear that the Lake affects the regional temperatures and humidity.

Re: Good Paddling Information

Very good paddling advice but I would add the following: 1) A waterproof visual distress beacon such as a strobe light. The are quite small and should be attached to your vest or person. Conventional flares could be used as well. If you become beached on a rock face and can't climb out, a waterproof...

It's interesting the article makes no mention regarding the expected fate of the wolves, now remaining on Michipicoten Island, now that their primary food source has been removed.

Re: June 16th-23rd hike trip route planning

Unless your heart is deeply set on doing an end to end of the Island, I suggest following a variation of the previous advice. On the north-east end of the Island the campgrounds are closer together, there are more of them on Lake Superior,(and almost all on the Big Lake have shelters) the inland lak...

Re: Trip Report July 12-18, 2017

Thanks for the nice trip report. It's a bit unusual for weather delays on the ferries in July but a 2 hour delay's not bad. Were you able to get off the boat at Amygdaloid Island? Even though there is no ranger stationed there anymore, does anyone still live there? I think maintenance had a cabin th...

Re: June Trip

On my last trip I was hoping for some opportunities for night photography. I was somewhat dismayed by the light pollution to the north caused by Thunder Bay. It was enhanced by reflection from high cloud cover even though the south sky was clear. Maybe if the entire sky had been clear things would h...
