There should be 2 imprints of melted frost created by 2 frozen butt cheeks. Time for photoshop.

Re: Where to spend a day?

Here's some Greenstones. I enjoy sitting on a beach and sifting through the pebbles looking for them, but always throw them back in the water. As Ed said, it's illegal to keep them. That's a mighty nice one in the center there. I have a full 35 mm film canister collected from the 1970's, before the...

Re: Where to spend a day?

Make sure you do your homework. Even on somewhat calm days and armed with the best nautical chart, shoals just under the surface can present great danger. Add into that some wave action and the uncertainty goes way up. I would want a good GPS with preset waypoints marked on a chart and maybe even a ...

Re: May 2018 McCargo-Daisy-Moskey-Chippewa

Great a great trip and report, Jerry. I'm glad you had at least dryer if not warmer weather, but for this time of year you made out quite well. I heartily agree about the trail along the Rock Harbor channel being some of the most rigorous, tiring and a real leg burner, especially the 4 miles to Mosk...

Re: Where to spend a day?

In addition to the lessor visited campgrounds mentioned, there are also campgrounds on various islands. Almost all of these have docks, but I think your underlying question is about isolated beach areas. There are very few locations with true sandy beaches but there are many small harbors and trap r...

Re: Feldtmann Loop Fishing

Does anyone have any idea of the kind of fish you can catch in Siskiwit Bay? Any tips on spots to go besides the dock? You might find Lake Trout or Northern from the dock. Another spot to try is the mouth of the Big Siskiwit River or other parts of the river. The trail to Island Mine has a bridge t...

Re: Ranger Underway

Even though the first public ferry date this year for the Ranger is May 29th, it begins making several trips as soon as possible after the park officially opens in mid April. On most of these trips it overnights at Mott Island, essentially stocking up the headquarters with gear and supplies. Even du...

Re: Feldtmann Loop Fishing

Brook Trout in Washington Creek is a maybe. I don't know if a Michigan licence is needed there. I would suspect it is. Correction: Maybe no license is needed for Washington Creek, but yes of course for Washington Harbor. See page 8 of "The Greenstone." Inland Lakes and Streams Licenses are not requi...

Re: May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th

Looking at today's NOAA satellite imagery. It appears the last of the ice (at least visible by MODIS) is gone. Siskiwit Lake and Amygdaloid Channel cleared up in the last 2 days.

Re: NOAA study of plastics on NPS shoreline

Time to give up the Fleece? Maybe just quit washing it? I always thought the organic compounds released from various synthetic materials were far more dangerous than the micro-particles. I know the focus is on various life forms that ingest the micro-particles so I guess it's good we ...

Re: water taxi rates

I want to go to Lane Cove without Doubling Back. I wonder if you can book it at last minute. Since I am a solo traveler, I will last minute book on the Queen and it has worked well for me when I have a spare few days in summer. The taxi might be available last minute but since they take reservation...

Re: Ice Coverage

Yesterday, the camera showed mostly ice with the far shore open a bit. It's probably melting quickly but could also be blowing around a bit. Looking better though. I wonder what the float plane's requirements are, other than (or beyond) safety first.
