Daydreaming about IR is one of my winter hobbies
I'm pretty sure those were Sand Hill Cranes around 2:27. They were really loud and when they took off to fly it was amazing. They were huge

Black Elk Wilderness-Black Hills South Dakota
First time in 4 years I couldn't make it to Isle Royale. Next year I'm planning a trip back! I did go to the Black Hills this summer. It was a great trip My buddy decided to make this his last backpacking trip. Said it was 'time to retire and become a day hiker'. So I did this video as a little trib...

Re: Itinerary suggestions:best chance at seeing wolves
I have solo hiked on the island the last three years. Last year I was trekking from Rock Harbor to Windigo via the Greenstone in May. I was surprised by the amount of wolf scat that was on the trail. I was camping at South Lake Desor and was jolted from a sound sleep around midnight by howling wolve...

Re: Hiking To Grand Portage? Need Help!!!
Jerabree, Would you consider going to Isle Royale first and then hiking the SHT North to South? When I was on the Island in May, there was a guy that hiked about 80 miles on IR and then took the ferry to Grand Portage. He mentioned he was going to thru hike the SHT, I offered him a ride to the Otter...

Re: Fishing Pole for Backpacking?
Thanks Vandy! I didn't see that one when I was searching around. It looks good. I found this one online this morning when I was looking around. http://www.gofastandlight.com/Ultralight-Pen-Fishing-Rod-with-Spinning-Reel-COMBO/productinfo/FI-PCOMSTF/ I'll have to check with my buddies that fish to se...

Fishing Pole for Backpacking?
Help..I need some gear advice, are there fishing poles made for backpackers, small, light, etc? Any suggestions for a reasonable price…under $50? I would just be using for fun and fishing from the shore. I know nothing about fishing, but it seems like it would be a lot of fun to have a fishing pole ...

Re: Early spring for the bugs?
The flies were out in full force at Windigo on May 19th. I heard Feldtmann was really bad too. Not many skeeters yet where I was (Daisy Farm, S Desor, Washington Creek), but lots of bees at Washington Creek.

Re: McCargoe to Windigo 5/5-5/10
I just got back from IR today. The Hawks are still dive bombing solo hikers. I talked to two before the boat came. One guy got knocked to the ground when it smacked him in the back of the head. As for the other guy...the hawk took his hat and dropped it about 50 yards into the woods...he didn't go a...

Re: What are you going to use your REI dividend on? 2012 edi
I picked up some Mountain House meals, a new pair of hiking socks and a 5-liter Sea to Summit Kitchen Sink. I'll use that for getting water so I can filter it at camp. My feet were freezing getting water from the lake last year. Nice cold water for drinking, not so much fun standing in it.

Re: Wolf population is at risk (News article)
I have mixed feelings…I do believe that we should let nature run it’s course, but since Minnesota and Wisconsin are going to allow hunting of wolves, why not capture and relocate a half dozen healthy ones to the island? I know there are many costs related to relocating animals and we shouldn’t alter...
