Re: 1st Trip to Isle Royale

You will have a great trip. Plan for cold nights. A few other miscellaneous thoughts: Be aware of the rules for groups. you cannot go over ten people, so keep an eye on the number of friends with you.You are limited to group sites. Make sure to visit Rainbow Cove when you are at Feldtman Make sure t...

Re: First Time, Feldtmann Loop, Early August

The next closest water source to Island Mine, other than the small brook, is likely back down the trail towards Siskiwit--closer to Siskiwit than to I.M. I recall a water source on the Greenstonedown near Washington Creek, but I think that is further. I plan on the I.M. brook as the only source and,...

Re: First Time, Feldtmann Loop, Early August

You have a great route planned and should be just fine. A few thoughts for you: 1. If last year is a guide, the trails may be quite overgrown. Hiking after a rain or through morning dew may result in wet pants. 2. On the way up to Island Mine, you will pass what looks like a small side trail branchi...

Re: Hidden Lake to Lane Cove

I like the idea of a taxi to Hidden Lake dock. I did that on my first day on the island a couple of years ago and there was plenty of time to get to Lane Cove. Nothing technical about the trail. It may be a bit overgrown, but you should be able to see the trail, or at least feel it. I am told the tr...

Re: Life of a Ranger on IR

A ranger was told me a funny story about another ranger. It was early August and I was commenting on how I had gorged myself on raspberries on the island. They were ripe and all over the place. This other ranger placed his order for groceries. Under "Fruit", he noted, "best available". A few days la...

Re: Extras

I always bring a very light pair of water/camp shoes. All it takes is to wade into the lake and to step on an old fish hook to ruin a trip.

I think a second pair of hiking shoes is a huge overkill. If you a truly concerned, pack a tube of shoe goo and some duck tape.

Re: 7/7/2017 – 7/15/2017 [Windigo to Rock Harbor]

In my trip at the beginning of the month, I asked a ranger about the butterflies. The ranger told us that male butterflies need moisture and they get it from old charcoal and similar deposits. News to me!

Re: Advice/Suggestions on First IR Trip

Great plan. Island Mine is like a typical Northern Wisconsin campsite surrounded by trees. It is the only camp not on a body of water and that is part of its bad rap. Drinking water comes from a creek (it is marked on the site map). I have never seen it totally dry, but I have seen it quite low wher...

Re: Advice/Suggestions on First IR Trip

You will have a great trip. I agree on the layover day. I like Todd Harbor myself (go through group site 1 to the Lake and lounge on the boulders). I suggest you plan a layover. If you do not need it, consider Moskey. Always good to have choices.

Re: Better to visit Isle Royale ASAP or later in September?

"Traffic" (and that is a relative term) will be lighter in September, but the stores will be closed. On the other hand, August offers blueberries, rasberries and thimbleberries.

Torpified is right. I offered my pace not because I think that is what you will do, but to show the variability. From your description, I suspect you will cover more ground than me. You will be just fine.

Re: Rock Harbor to Windigo in 2.5 days on Labor Day Weekend - Advice on Itinerary

[/quote] Thanks for the suggestions. I used my usual hiking pace for this itinerary(2.5-2.7 mph moving pace and 2.0 mph overall for extremely rocky and hilly terrain). I rarely take long breaks but would definitely take short stops to enjoy the nature. The trails don't have lot of ups and downs too....

Re: Rock Harbor to Windigo in 2.5 days on Labor Day Weekend - Advice on Itinerary

you will need a special permit to camp outside a set camp site. Only certain portions of the island are open to that. Have you considered: Lane Cove-McCargo-Moskey (or Chippewa)--RH? If I counted your nights correctly, that would work and still give you some decent miles. It would also save you a bu...

Re: Rock Harbor to Windigo in 2.5 days on Labor Day Weekend - Advice on Itinerary

Welcome. Better you than me for your second day! That said, the trail for that day is fairly routine. on your third day, from island mine to windigo is largely downhill, so that is quite doable. I do not see how the Minong will fit into this trip, given your time constraints, unless you came to the ...
