Not sure this will work. One, a very common sight of beaver activity. The second, a frosty breakfast table (that is my coffee cup) at Chippewa.

Re: May 2018 McCargo-Daisy-Moskey-Chippewa

I do have a few pictures--a great sunrise--but I have never been able to figure out how to successfully post them.

Glad I am not the only one with the weird appetite issue!

May 2018 McCargo-Daisy-Moskey-Chippewa

From May16-20, my brother and I were on the island following the route noted above. I have been there about a dozen times and it was my brother’s second trip. I hope this report is helpful to someone. The Voyageur: We travelled on the Voyageur both ways and the trip was great, as usual. This was the...

Weather may 16-20, 2018

Just off the island. Daytime by the shore quite cold and very windy. Nicer inland. Freezing to near freezing at night. Great hiking weather and almost no rain. I will post a full trip report later

Re: water taxi rates

I went from Hidden Lake to Lane cove. Using the taxi eliminated the need to double back over a trail. I don’t really remember much about the trail itself. Lookout Louise was nice but growing trees are obstructing the view. I loved Lane Cove. Peaceful with loads of loons.

Re: Feldtmann Loop vs Minong

I too enjoy the Feldtman Loop. I have done the Minong as well. I agree that the better direction for me is from McCargo to Windigo. When I did the Minong, I planned (and had it on my permit) to camp in the back country between Desor and Windigo. About half way there is a creek for water. When we rea...

Re: Opening Day Weather

I checked in with the Grand Portage Ferry yesterday. I am on the (now) second boat to the island in two weeks. No guarantees but it looks good for the ice to be gone!

Re: May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th

I am on the Voyager on May 16 and have been wondering about conditions too. I am pretty confident that I will get to Windigo ok but my plan is to be dropped off at McCargo. I can envision that not working. I will just have to be flexible. A few years ago I was in the same position and ended up on th...

Re: our first backpacking adventure

I have only been to Lane Cove once and it did fill up. Not like a camper can just turn around and go to the next campground. I ended up sharing with two other folks. The next day, I was the only person at Lane Cove. Maybe it was something I said.

Re: water taxi rates

I had a similar head scratcher a few years ago. I was on a solo trip and had reserved a taxi to go to Hidden Lake so I could start my hike there. I don't remember the cost. I met two other hikers when we were checking in and they were interested in the same route. I told them to share the taxi with ...

Re: Tent for 3, or individual?

Money can certainly play into this, as well as the likelihood the equipment will get future use. If neither of those is an overriding factor, my preference would be two two-person tents. You would have plenty of space and future flexibility for trips with fewer than three people. I have used a two p...

Re: 1st Trip to Isle Royale

You will have a great trip. Plan for cold nights. A few other miscellaneous thoughts: Be aware of the rules for groups. you cannot go over ten people, so keep an eye on the number of friends with you.You are limited to group sites. Make sure to visit Rainbow Cove when you are at Feldtman Make sure t...

Re: First Time, Feldtmann Loop, Early August

The next closest water source to Island Mine, other than the small brook, is likely back down the trail towards Siskiwit--closer to Siskiwit than to I.M. I recall a water source on the Greenstonedown near Washington Creek, but I think that is further. I plan on the I.M. brook as the only source and,...
