Possible effects of sequestration

Has the NPS published their plan for sequestration and its impact on ISRO? If so, what will the impacts be?

Re: QUESTIONS!!!!!! first venture to IR!

For a group of 4, a white gas stove would probably be equally as efficient and as heavy as a canister stove for heating water and/or cooking. You will need a minimum of 16oz/500ml of hot water per freeze dried meal which gets you into having to heat 2q/2l of water per hot meal and at that point the ...

Re: Route options for 2013!

If you have an Alpacka type packraft, you could ditch the kayak. An Alpacka would have a slower top speed than a kayak due to the shorter length, but you should be able to paddle from RH to DF or MB in 6-8 hours tops. Keep in mind that Rock Harbor does occasionally get rough seas (one of the Rangers...

Any recent trips to Sargent Lake?

I am thinking/planning a 2013 pack boating trip to ISRO which would include a zone camp and paddle on Sargent Lake. I am planning on approaching Sargent Lake from the south at a point on the Greenstone not to far west of the intersection of the Daisy Farm access trail. The zone camp would be on or n...

Re: Trails with easy water access - Eddison Fishery.

Expect the water temperature to be cold. All of the beaches will have rocks or gravel or both, so foot protection is important for everyone -- whoever is filtering water will also need to wade out into the water. Campgrounds will have good access to the water. As far as zone camping, there is inform...

Re: Hello and a question

Have fun on ISRO. Keep in mind that the way the Park Service uses "back country" on ISRO is a little different that the way they use it at say Yellowstone: at Yellowstone a back country campsite is any campsite that cannot be accessed from a road; on ISRO ALL campsites are back county but ...

Re: Bushwacking Question

It certainly would be an adventure. Keep in mind that much off trail terrain on ISRO is difficult to very difficult due to some or all of the following: marsh, rock walls, beaver dams, unmarked mine shafts, and streams/creeks. Sufficient drinking water may also be an issue (when you are away from in...

Re: Misc Gear

I really like that pumpbag. I wonder if anyone makes one for the Thermarest Neo Air?
My NeoAir (purchased earlier in 2012 from REI) came with a pumpbag/ stuff sack. The size of the pump bag does matter -- the one that came with my NeoAir is not much more efficient than using my lungs...

Re: Leaving gear at Rock Harbor??

You could do a mail drop (ie. mail the items via the Voyager II, which is the designated USPO delivery method to (and from) ISRO). There is additional information elsewhere in this forum on how to do this. Your postage would be regular US postage for the item that you are sending. The Ranger Station...

Re: Need a Compass

A basic Silva or Brunton compass with romer scales (which are useful in conjunction with the NatGeo ISRO map and a GPS to plot locations) should be all you need. I found that my Silva Ranger sighting compass was useful on the Minong in a stretch of trail where the cairns on exposed rock were missing...

Re: First time going to IR gear & fishing questions

ISRO requires barbless hooks for fishing, so you will need to file the barbs off or squeeze them down with a pliers. You may need to wade into some of the lakes, so be prepared to deal with leeches and have some foot protection. Leeches are yucky to deal with but having a puncture injury to your foo...

Re: 7 Days on Isle Royale... Itinerary Suggestions?

I concur with the Minong. While this trail is technical, you will be able to do the activities that you want to do and you will not have a lot of company. There are mines near McCargo Cove and near Todd Harbor (and I suppose near Huginnin Cove as well). There is fishing at McCargo Cove. Due to terra...

Re: help with last minute tweaks to thru-hike itinerary

Tobin Harbor trail is much less technical than the Rock Harbor Trail between the dock and the Three Mile campground, so you should be able to make good time. If you can get to DF (Daisy Farm) the first night, I advise making W Chickenbone the 2d night. The rest of your itinerary is quite doable. A f...

Re: I dont want to be a statistic

Keep in mind that the water temperature on and near ISRO is significantly cooler that the water temperature near South Haven. The W. Lake Superior weather buoy was reading 64dF for the water temp and the S. Lake Michigan buoy was reading 74 for the water temp. A weather radio (or better yet a marine...

Re: Greenstone Ridge Trail fastest known time (FKT) attempt

Best of luck and do be careful (you will be dealing with exposed rock which is slippery when wet and some board "walks" which are narrow and possibly slippery. Once you are past Mt. Franklin headed NE, the trail will be essentially overgrown with plants. As you will be hitting this stretch...
