Re: Adding or Reintroducing Wolves to IR

Well, of course that depends, yours or mine? :) Approximately 15 months prior to the 3 wolves falling victim to the mine pit (and 7 months before I suddenly lost my dad to bladder cancer), I had a simultaneous face-to-face encounter with the 2 males. So it was quite sad for me to hear that news. I s...

Re: First time Canoe Trip to IR

Without clarification, I assume DQuebed is starting at Grand Portage. So the overnite(s) at Windigo would be unnecessary unless you believe in monsters, and are hoping to see the "windigo".

Re: Adding or Reintroducing Wolves to IR

Citation for which point: 1) That the planet is a sphere; or 2) ice bridges are never man-made.?

If u keep picking on me, Tampico, I'm not gonna portage your boat! :)

Re: Adding or Reintroducing Wolves to IR

It would be great if things could work out "on their own". However, due to global warming and the vastly reduced likelihood of any future ice bridges, by definition "it" cannot. And it cannot because of man's intervention in the form of climate change. Isle Royale's situation is ...

Re: First time Canoe Trip to IR

Hey Midwest Ed. That's a great idea to start at malone bay. Somehow since the V-2's circumnavigation is clockwise, it is counter-intuititive (for me anyway) to think in terms of going "backwards" on the route. What's funny is that my first trip to Lake Whittlesey was done in that exact man...

Re: First time Canoe Trip to IR

Respecting Loons on Lake Whittlesey From mid-May through July 15 (loon nesting season) visitors are to stay at least 150' away from small islands. Last May, Whittlesey had 3 pair of loons. When I returned in September, the pair that hangs out on the 2 tiny islands (referenced in my post above) was g...

Re: Adding or Reintroducing Wolves to IR

After seeing isabelle's experience when she tried to join what is now the west end trio ( and now knowing about half of the 8 wolves are female), my earlier idea of introducing a couple gals from Hurley's red light district is not a good one. If there is another year without reproduction, i would vo...

Re: First time Canoe Trip to IR

U sorta knocked on my door so I'm gonna answer. Adopt Ingo's option #2. Taking the voyaguer, u have the incredible option of getting dropped at chippewa, and being picked up again at Malone Bay. If your girlfriend ever found out what u guys had passed up, u would be in the doghouse. The V-2 will dro...

Re: Duncan Bay Dock

Hikers then are sort of like leprechauns. Turning 2 BEERS into 3 green ones. Happy St. Pat's. He fed a multitude of bare-footed hikers with just 2 FISH (coasters) and 5 loaves (Wasa cracker bread). . It would take more than just a wee bit of faith, to backpack barefoot on Isle Royale. Yours truly, R...

Re: Duncan Bay Dock

If and when the shelters at Duncan Bay are removed, i hope they leave the standing fire grill at the existing campsite, assuming it has some life left in it at that point in time.

My guess is that the 2 tentsites on the peninsula will share a single fire ring.

See you on the trails ...

Re: Duncan Bay Dock

Are these shelters getting the axe, in part b/c they are in sad shape? Not sure how long shelters have been in the park, but i always thought they were there for safety (hypothermia/death) and not convenience/comfort. Coming off 5finger bay during a storm, the shelters at DB are vital IMO. Aren't th...

Re: Duncan Bay Dock

Anybody know if Duncan Bay will continue as a campground? Will the existing campsite keep its picnic table and standing fire grill? I assume the 3 fire grills on the peninsula will be history(?)-yet undetermined?

Re: "Off-season" consecutive nights stay limit at campground

Out of simple respect for the time and energy I spent composing the original and subsequent posts, I would think you would read the entire thread b4 referring to my idea as frivolous. The proposed 7 day self-governing rule is specific to Chippewa only, and specific to the month of September only. Th...

An Isle Royale without wolves. Would u still visit?

Would you? Hopefully, none of us will ever have to make a choice. But would you?

If it would be any consolation, there is a wolf on display at the Windigo visitor center.

Re: "Off-season" consecutive nights stay limit at campground

Due to regular typical weather (lake conditions), the voyageur's last date for pick-ups on the north shore (mc cove & belle isle) is saturday, sept 14. That means if the old veterans are on the north shore in september, they have no choice but to leave sept 14, which "places" them at R...
