Re: Trail Tracking

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a Garmin inreach mini. It will synch with your smartphone. I always take my phone with me and use it as a camera anyway. As I'm getting older, I think it will give my wife a little piece of mind since I'm solo 75% of the time. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/...

Re: BUGS!

This concentrate is much more economical. Dilute it 19 to 1 for the same 0.5% solution sold in the spray containers. I just put some mixed solution in a bucket and dump the clothes in. Make sure you wear latex or nitrile gloves. Don't get any solution on your skin and rinse thoroughly if you do. Ge...

Re: Splitting Freeze Dried food(Mountain House)

This is basically how I eat on all of hiking trips. Dehydrated food (instead of MH) in freezer bags and use my knit cap as a coozy. In bear country, I use a padded UPS envelope with some relectix inside then stick that back in my vault or bear bag. I totally agree on the mix well. Made that mistake ...

Re: Shorts vs Pants in June

I'm a shorts guy and then wear my rain pants if the bugs are bad or if it's too chilly for shorts. Gaiters if it's wet (rain or heavy morning dew). It's not a good back country trip unless you come back with scratches on your legs. :D

Re: Rock Harbor Lodge - Disability Q

I've gotta think that if you've told them that you're trying to accommodate someone with a disability, the odds are good that they'll put you on the first floor.

Re: NOAA study of plastics on NPS shoreline

Time to give up the Fleece? Maybe just quit washing it? I always thought the organic compounds released from various synthetic materials were far more dangerous than the micro-particles. I know the focus is on various life forms that ingest the micro-particles so I guess it's good we...

Re: Feldtmann Loop vs Minong

How about a mash up of the two itineraries?

Windigo to Feldtmann
Feldtmann to Siskiwit
Siskwit to S Desor
S. Desor to Malone for pick up the next day.

I did this in the fall 2014 and it was very enjoyable. The trail from Ipsheming to Malone was a jungle but still a great hike along lake siskiwit.

Re: First time Sept trip

My son and I did the Ranger's first run of the season back in May of 2012. We shared Daisy with 2 other people and you would have never known they were there. We easily scored shelters at 3 Mile, Moskey, Daisy and RH, but had our tent just in case. I would assume that it's the same way in mid-Septem...

Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

The author of the original comment referenced was indeed ignorant while I characterized it as crude. But he still inadvertently predicted the same result that the newly introduced 20 wolves and their offspring will also, almost certainly, become extirpated once again by the isolation of the Island ...

Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

I saw one comment on wasting tax dollars claiming that the island couldn't support 20 wolves and they'd kill each other off. There is actually some inadvertent truth in that statement (although not in the crude manner the author probably suggested). The Island once had as many as 50 wolves and ulti...

I like the Pictured Rocks idea. A little more tame, but still good views of Superior.

Bummer Hobbes. Where are you coming from? Maybe there are other options for a hike that week.

Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

I think the facebook group's comments resemble the comments on the news articles. Many times you'll see someone say something to the point of "Just open a moose hunting season". It's hard to take someone seriously when they don't understand the dynamics of the island and the limitations that come wi...
