Re: Hammocks

I hung on some of the Feldtmann loop in the fall of 14 at Feldtmann Lake and Siskiwit Bay before heading east to spend the 3rd night at S Desor. Very enjoyable hike with a side trip to Rainbow cove for the sunset on the first night.

You need to make sure to avoid birch/small birch trees for your hammock as they can pull up. However I used a birch > 1ft diameter at several sites, I just convinced myself that they were strong enough before hanging there. Make sure they're alive and big enough. You'll be fine. https://i.imgur.com...

Re: Good Article on The America

I discovered Howard Sivertson and his works last week at the monument in Grand Portage. I ordered a couple of his books yesterday. I'm really looking forward to reading them.

Re: Boating Question (Bass Boating to the Island)

Best of luck to you. We occasionally fish Lake Michigan in a buddy's 21' Procraft. We have to watch the weather and wind, timing it just right for the 2 hour drive up. It doesn't take much to make it a dicey proposition just getting out of the harbor.

Re: Freeze-dried foods at Windigo and Rock Harbor stores?

There is no longer a grill at Windigo :( . Packaged sandwiches and frozen pizza in the microwave only, assuming they haven't run out. Bummer. Sandwiches were a welcome treat after several days on the trail. Do they sill sell ice cream? Yup! Still have ice cream :). Alas, during the week of labor da...

Re: Now in my top 7 for "must have" cooking gear...

I take at least 1 piece on every trip, as I use HD foil as a windscreen for my pop can stove. On the last couple of BWCA trips, I've taken some in lieu of a skillet for frying fish.

The Greenstone is going to remind you a lot of the Knobstone or Low Gap, minus the road crossings. If you're coming through Indy, honk on the way through and I'll wave to you. Haha. Found a Hoosier here in the Forum. Please tell me there are more than the minus road crossings thing at Isle Royale. ...

Re: Arrival, Ranger III and other questions

1. Based on 6 hour ride estimation, Ranger would arrive RH at 3 PM. How long does it usually take to finish the orientation and get the permits. Orientation, the LNT talk, takes place on the ride over. I'd be surprised if there are very many other hikers on the boat. You should easily be on the tra...

I can't imagine you're really planning on camping for 6 days without soap and a pack towel.
Guilty of no soap and my towel is more like a microfiber wash cloth.

As far as TP, I've always carried in a partial role. There has always been TP in the outhouses, but it's of the John Wayne variety.

Verizon is spotty all the way up the north shore once you get past Two Harbors. I haven't been in Grand Portage since 2015, but Tofte was basically a dead zone this spring.

Re: general conditions--July 2017

Finally, I noticed several groups wading through a creek outflow just short of Senter Point near Siskiwit. No need to do this; there is a fully functional bridge just a bit inland. But what's the fun in using a bridge? :D Thanks for the update. Was the overgrowth particularly bad at any specific po...
