Re: Unfounded Safety Concerns

I know facebook was incidental to the real point of the opening post, but for what it's worth, I'm also going to start trying to direct a subset of the adults raising questions on the private FB group there to this forum. FB is great for pictures, but this is a better platform for expressing sustai...

Re: Unfounded Safety Concerns

Thanks Jerry. I enjoy that group too. There are some fantastic pictures that get posted there on a regular basis during the season. I've suggested this forum quite a few times for adults asking questions about routes, gear, etc... The wilderness ranger program sounds like something that would maybe ...

Re: Unfounded Safety Concerns

My mistake, I shouldn't have referred to it as the Island's facebook page, but rather an Island private group page.

That said, it doesn't change the intent of my post.

I appreciate your opinion, but respectfully don't agree with your conclusions and suggestions.

Unfounded Safety Concerns

I'm a member of the Island's facebook page and I've noticed recently that there is no shortage of people asking questions and offering advice who fall into 2 categories. Parents of children between the ages of 8 and 15 who are staying at the lodge and are concerned if their kids are old enough to ha...

I'm sorry to hear that you're having those issues. Perhaps the opportunity will arise next year as part of a group outing.

Re: Best cell signal at West end of island?

I have found that AT&T provides the best signal in the Barnum/Washington Island/Rock of Ages area. * At Barnum/Washington Islands, I can get one bar of 4G from AT&T, and multiple bars of 4G from ROGERS (Canadian provider). * At the Rock of Ages lighthouse, I can get three bars of 4G from AT&T OR RO...

Re: Colorado Hikers to Isle Royale

Here's a list of outfitters over in MN that may be able to help with your canoe rental. You'll want to look at a map to see where they're located so you're not driving out of your way.

Re: Trail Tracking

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a Garmin inreach mini. It will synch with your smartphone. I always take my phone with me and use it as a camera anyway. As I'm getting older, I think it will give my wife a little piece of mind since I'm solo 75% of the time. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/...

Re: BUGS!

This concentrate is much more economical. Dilute it 19 to 1 for the same 0.5% solution sold in the spray containers. I just put some mixed solution in a bucket and dump the clothes in. Make sure you wear latex or nitrile gloves. Don't get any solution on your skin and rinse thoroughly if you do. Ge...

Re: Splitting Freeze Dried food(Mountain House)

This is basically how I eat on all of hiking trips. Dehydrated food (instead of MH) in freezer bags and use my knit cap as a coozy. In bear country, I use a padded UPS envelope with some relectix inside then stick that back in my vault or bear bag. I totally agree on the mix well. Made that mistake ...

Re: Shorts vs Pants in June

I'm a shorts guy and then wear my rain pants if the bugs are bad or if it's too chilly for shorts. Gaiters if it's wet (rain or heavy morning dew). It's not a good back country trip unless you come back with scratches on your legs. :D

I've gotta think that if you've told them that you're trying to accommodate someone with a disability, the odds are good that they'll put you on the first floor.

Re: NOAA study of plastics on NPS shoreline

Time to give up the Fleece? Maybe just quit washing it? I always thought the organic compounds released from various synthetic materials were far more dangerous than the micro-particles. I know the focus is on various life forms that ingest the micro-particles so I guess it's good we...
