Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

The author of the original comment referenced was indeed ignorant while I characterized it as crude. But he still inadvertently predicted the same result that the newly introduced 20 wolves and their offspring will also, almost certainly, become extirpated once again by the isolation of the Island ...

Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

I saw one comment on wasting tax dollars claiming that the island couldn't support 20 wolves and they'd kill each other off. There is actually some inadvertent truth in that statement (although not in the crude manner the author probably suggested). The Island once had as many as 50 wolves and ulti...

I like the Pictured Rocks idea. A little more tame, but still good views of Superior.

Bummer Hobbes. Where are you coming from? Maybe there are other options for a hike that week.

Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

I think the facebook group's comments resemble the comments on the news articles. Many times you'll see someone say something to the point of "Just open a moose hunting season". It's hard to take someone seriously when they don't understand the dynamics of the island and the limitations that come wi...

Excalibur is currently having a sale. 15% off anything over $199. They also have a nice 4 tray model in the refurbished section for $89!

Lovely walk and very scenic. We did it on my first trip to the island and really glad we did.

What an interesting read. I'd love to sit down with Roy McBride and ask some questions.

Re: Minong in May?

I've been well. I haven't been to the Island since 2014, but I'm headed back this fall. I discovered canoeing in the boundary waters, so that's been soaking up all my vacation time. Congratulations on the AT thru hike! It's good to see you back on the forum. Is there an AT trip report anywhere? You ...

Re: Minong in May?

Tom and Kevin pretty much covered everything. I once went to the island prior to anyone being on it when the Ranger III was sending over scientists, equipment, and a ranger to kick off the preseason. It was very interesting, I did not see anyone for almost a full week. I did do the Minong like you ...

Re: First time IR trip in May. Does my gear list have any glaring holes?

From the NPS for those who want to use a hammock for camping: Leave No Trace: Travel and camp on durable surfaces Hammock use has been steadily increasing on the island but they can significantly impact the landscape or be dangerous if used incorrectly. The only place they can be used is in the alr...

Re: First time IR trip in May. Does my gear list have any glaring holes?

Careful with the hammock set up. IRNP put out a post the other day asking folks to not bring hammocks. I thought the post just reiterated guidelines in the Greenstone saying that you could only hang within boundaries of established campsites and not in/on shelters. Maybe I missed the one to which y...

Re: Feldtman loop mid May

Wolves will likely put a dent in the Beaver population and some of this flooding will go away along with the beavers.
