Re: Best cell signal at West end of island?

I have found that AT&T provides the best signal in the Barnum/Washington Island/Rock of Ages area. * At Barnum/Washington Islands, I can get one bar of 4G from AT&T, and multiple bars of 4G from ROGERS (Canadian provider). * At the Rock of Ages lighthouse, I can get three bars of 4G from AT&T OR ROG...

Re: Fly and Skeeter check

I was in the Washington Harbor area last week and bugs were non-existent. This doesn't mean it will be the same way when you're there, but it bodes well for your visit.

I always bring a head net and bug spray. It's not a lot to carry for the benefit it provides should you need it.

Re: Rock of Ages lighthouse restoration 2018

We were forced to depart the island rather quickly today due to rapidly deteriorating weather. So unfortunately I wasn't able to find tune the internet or the webcam. Hopefully next week's work crew will be able to make some adjustments.

Re: Rock of Ages lighthouse restoration 2018

Thanks guys for posting some of the snapshots. As you can see the camera is currently working as long as we have solar power. I'm still trying to find out a permanent way to affix it in the lens room. if someone has any suggestions as where to point it I'm open for it but currently we have appointed...

Re: Rock of Ages lighthouse restoration 2018

We've got internet! As of 1151 CST, on 8 Jul 18, we're stuck on Barnum Island, so the camera's sitting in the cabin looking northeast. While the camera is powered up, we're posting to here:

Rock of Ages lighthouse restoration 2018

The Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society ( RoALPS ) has started their work year on the restoring the lighthouse. The first work crew headed out to Isle Royale on 29 June 2018. For the next seven weeks, teams will go and perform restoration work. I will be on the second team, working from 7-1...

Re: Best cell signal at West end of island?

fonixmunkee, Has a web cam and network solution been arrived at yet for the Rock of Ages project? Ed, sorry for the delayed response. I lost track of some of the posts on the forum as of late. NO, we don't have a reliable web cam solution just yet. I am going to be bringing a home-built Raspberry P...

My first trip to the island did not go as planned but it was still a blast.
You definitely faced some adversity with the flooding in the UP. How did the island fair with all the rain that affected the UP?

Those two things, for some reason, really make me miss Isle Royale.

Also, congrats on the first trip report of 2018. I'm glad to hear that, despite everything, you enjoyed you trip.

Feldtmann Lake has lots of pike. We've caught some decent ones right from the shore.

I think you can safely add Mount Ojibway: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-w ... ?ID=MOJIM4
Although labeled as "Welcome Island, ON" on wunderground, the coordinates and elevation appear correct (48.109 -88.607 > 1131 ft). As well as the MOJI id.
Added, thanks Ingo!

Re: Minong in May?

May on the Minong is the perfect time to go. It's always warm up on the ridge line of the Minong, but in May it's not HOT, so it's the perfect temp up there for the strenuous hike.

Rain is always a possibility, no matter what time of year, so you can't plan for that.

Re: First time IR trip in May. Does my gear list have any glaring holes?

If I remember right, LifeStraws filter down to .2 microns, well below the suggested .4 margin for Isle Royale that I've seen. My only problem with those is having a water bottle with a big enough mouth to fit the filter in because it is not part of a water container system- I just have the two filt...
