Re: Parking at Grand Portage
Yes. They have parking right beside the docks. It is $4/day. They leave a "ticket" on your vehicle and when you get back you go to the office and pay. They take credit.

Sorry Nancy, I had to catch up on stuff around here, and we were down on the beach (Assateague Island National Park) this weekend. Caught some rays, whiting, and a dusky shark. I will try to post the rest ASAP!

Bulletin board from Windigo.
If you zoom in you can at least see the name and the faces that tell if it is good or not.

Day 2 Thursday July 25th Up at 6:30ish, heated up the same pot of water and put it into freezer bags which were holding: 1 cup of quick oats, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of powdered milk, some dried fruit. YUM! I also had some instant coffee that was premixed with flavored creamer. So...

Re: Leaving on Ship Tomorrow, Quick Questions.
We had backpacks, and buckets (see my TR). Everything in my pack was in a dry bag (except my dirty clothes). We paired up in carrying the canoes, but ours were the ones we use here in Maryland for white water, so they were quite heavy. We didn't have yokes but I had some 4" thick foam leftover ...

Re: I am a Canoob, QUICK QUESTION!
We had to squeeze past him too. He was there and offered to help us load our gear into the canoe and pull us down past his boat. He also left his fish parts at the take out from Whittlesay. We threw them from the actual portage into deeper water, but the gull had already found it and didn't l...

You didn't say where you were paddleing, but we paddled the interior lakes (McCargoe-Chickenbone-Livermore-LaSage-Richie-Intermediate-Siskwit-Wood-Whittlesey-Chippewa) from 7/24-8-1. Chickenbone had some flies, but the just landed and didn't bit. Livermore-LaSage-Richie We had overcast rainy breezy ...

Re: How much bug repellent to bring for 3 people in 8 days?
Just got back from an "across the middle of the island" canoe trip. Both my dad and I had an 4 oz bottle of Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Bug Spray (deet free). We just used about half of his (I didn't even open mine), but I was glad to have it. Two times I used BullFrog Mosquito Coast SPF 30 sun...

Re: Any Recent Campers who can comment on the bugs?
Sorry I'm posting this too late to help you, but it might help others. We just got back from a McCargo to Chippewa canoe trip that hit all of the inland lakes between the two. On the McCargo side of the Island we didn't have much problem with bugs. There were some flies on Chickenbone Lake but they ...

Re: Kayaking/hiking itinerary
Just got back from a McCargo --> Chippewa canoe trip. It took us two days to go from McCargo to Richie (we stayed at Chickenbone West), and we felt that it was a hard portage (from CB west to Richie). We carried our bags on the trail first and then went back and did the 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mi portages wit...
