Re: Friday-Monday from Rock Harbor thoughts

What transportation are you using? What time you arrive on Friday and leave on Monday has a lot to do with what we can recommend. That’s early enough that many visitor services will not be available yet. The great thing is lack of crowds. Are your boating skills up to renting a canoe and getting to ...

Re: June Trip Feedback

You do kinda have an extra day built in, by going GRT to Moskey to 3Mile then 3Mile to RH. Moskey to RH is 11 miles straight in, giving you an alternative if needed. Also GRT to Daisy Farm and then on to RH is miles shorter than through Moskey Basin. I agree with others that the length of the daily ...

Re: Itinerary suggestions

Sounds like a great trip. Try to schedule an overnight trip a couple weeks ahead of time, so you can check out the operation of your gear for overnighting, including stove, water filter, tent, etc.

Re: Greenstone Itinerary Feedback

I haven't set eyes on Island Mine or S Desor---maybe others can report?---. Island Mine is in a section of mixed birch/maple forest, and it is gorgeous in the fall with colors. Plus, campfires are allowed. That being said, there are no open views of anything. You are in a creek valley, which is uni...

Re: Greenstone Itinerary Feedback

Be aware that there is a 1-night limit in Rock Harbor. Lots of people stay at 3-Mile and then hike into Rock Harbor at the crack of dawn. This gives you time in RH area to both hike and enjoy Scoville Point and rent a canoe to go over to Hidden Lake and hike Lookout Louise, ands then catch a Ranger ...

Regarding bait, be sure to read up on the fishing refs for the Park as they are quite stringent with regard to baits.

Re: Fishing Siskiwit Lake

In August, the Lake Trout tend to be deep. Trolling from a boat-will you have a canoe or other small craft?

Re: Minong

Yes. Just skip Little Todd Harbor. Those are some long days of up and down from rocky outcrops to swamps to rocky outcrops to swamps. But others have done it, and if you are realistic about what you’re getting into, you can make the plan for yourself.

Re: May mud, mosquitos & trail conditions

As far as mosquitoes, a headnet is part of my gear anytime I go to Isle Royale regardless of season. A half ounce that might save your sanity!

Look back up the thread for dcclarrk's suggested itinerary, in the second post at the top.

Changing my userid

Moderators, is there any way to combine my former userid “bobcat” with my current persona “bobcat1 “? I had to register under a different name when I realized I didn’t know my password and my email on file was obsolete at a prior employer. Just curious. I would rather just have bobcat as my moniker.

Re: Early September Rock Harbor Loop 9/4 - 9/8

That hike has steep sections, but the foodbags will be empty. And, having Mt Franklin be your last high viewpoint as you exit wilderness back into the society of Rock Harbor is priceless.

Re: Early September Rock Harbor Loop 9/4 - 9/8

Chickenbone East is just a clearing in the woods, no great scenery etc, and it is a steep 1/2 mile downhill to the water source. As campsites go, it is strictly utilitarian. If you can handle roughly two miles more on days 3 and 4, you can go to McCargoe Cove for night 3 which is a very scenic and s...

Re: Hidden Lake > Daisy Farm mileage question

On the MV Sandy, the cost is per person, and the water taxi is per trip with a max of 4 persons/trip, I think. I've never actually used the water taxi. With 4 of you, the water taxi may be an affordable option, and you can set your own schedule. The one time I started the Greenstone from Hidden Lake...
