Re: TR 8/4-8/9 2017 [Backpacking] [Video log of RH, 3M, MB, MCC, DF, RH]

Great videos!! Many other people ask questions about this route. Your video will make an awesome informational video for people headed to the Island for the first time. You have just enough video of the sites and the routes without being long winded. I plan to funnel man of the questions that come u...

Re: Season Pass

I was talking to the folks at Headquarters. As indicated by the names of the passes The National park pass fees are divided among all of the parks and the Isle Royale pass fees stay with the Island. just something to think about next time you spend some money.

Re: Food storage in campgrounds

I have never had a problem with leaving food in tents or shelters. I too keep my food in dry bags and/or ziplocks. Like Midwest Ed, I have had a few problems while cooking/eating.

Re: Camping overnight at Moskey Basin or McCargoe Cove?

Of all the sites on the Island, Moskey is #1, McCargoe is #2 or #3 depending on the season.

Re: Which Itinerary?

My favorite short trip is: Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm Daisy Farm to McCargoe cove McCargoe Cove to Moskey Moskey to Rock Harbor The couple miles from Chickenbone to McCargoe is fairly easy and you can decide to continue or not as you have to walk through CB anyway. I love McCargoe. Moskey to Rock Har...

Re: Extras

The water proof lasted about two day (with gators) but the biggest problem I had with them was the soles getting really soft, almost like a comfy running shoe. After four or five days I could feel every rock I stepped on. There are many pointy pyramid shaped rocks on the trails. I had bruises on the...

Re: Extras

I destroyed a pair of Merrell Phaser peaks each of two years, so the idea of a breakdown is real. If you are going for a cheaper boot I would suggest a sturdier backup (although I have seen more than a couple people hiking in crocs) I now wear Asolo 520 and don't worry about it. my second shoe is a ...

Re: Windigo to Windigo 7 days/6 nights

Your plan is doable and you are correct, day five and six will make you wish you had a couple more days. Weather becomes more important as the summer moves on. by late August and September you may want to have and extra day for a storm day. Since you are coming from the West, have you considered goi...

Re: Advice/Suggestions on First IR Trip

I like Island Mine. It is one of my favorites and quite different than the rest of the sites on your itinerary. Like JerryB says, I have seen the water low, but still some there. Day three will be a bit long, I suggest getting up and on the trail so you wont feel rushed and will be able to take brea...

Re: Water shoes for lakes?

I have stepped out of my kayak at those campgrounds and stirred up the standard muck... I would bring shoes just for the rocks you will be walking on.

Re: Itinerary Advice-Chippewa Harbor to Rock Harbor

I can't speak to the Chippewa trail. that is one of the few I haven't been on. the rest of the hike looks quite comfortable given proper pack weights etc. The Minong mine is worth the trip. On my trips the moose have been quite predictable at McCargoe. Just before dawn and just after sunset has work...

Re: Hammock friendly campsites

I kayaked the island last year and stayed at most of the lake superior sites and the one along the inland lakes. Although I "could" have hung my hammock at many of the sites, I was only happy with the LNT of Birch Island because of tree sizes. If you have a strict definition of "within the existing ...
