Re: 1st time ever! Input please

That is a nice first trip. Daisy might be a bit too much for "neither of us are super fit or young" if you are getting off the Ranger at 3:00. Remember your itinerary as filed is flexible. Mount Franklin and Suzy's cave are nice places to look at. Consider the Tobin harbor trail for different scener...

Re: First time back country camper. What to bring to Isle Royale?

I just got back from 6 nights, we (2) used this filter for two people at about two gallons per person per day with no problems. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sawyer-Products-Squeeze-Water-Filter/24689330?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=5761&adid=22222222227017575492&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=409698...

Just back from a 6 day trip

I just got back yesterday, 6/1, from a six night trip spent mostly in Rock Harbor and Moskey. I hiked the trails from Snug harbor to Moskey and the Greenstone and connectors from the Greenstone to the Rock Harbor trail. These trails were all in good shape and the rangers report all trails are in goo...

Just back from a 6 day trip

I just got back yesterday, 6/1, from a six night trip spent mostly in Rock Harbor and Moskey. Night time temps were in the low to mid 40s and the mosquitoes just started hatching on my last day. I saw a few piles of snow and ice on the Tobin harbor trail. day time temps were in the low 70s on the sh...

Re: Padded Cells

I use this stuff: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Reflectix-100-sq-ft-Reflective-Roll-Insulation-48-in-W-x-25-ft-L/3011906 It's sort of bubble wrap with foil on either side. It works great for padding, amazingly for cup and pot insulation and weighs next to nothing. I tape it up with: https://www.lowes.com...

Re: Portage Distance

It's about .8 or .9 miles by my thumb, 1.2 with a bit of back and forth would be within range. It's only slightly longer than it used to be due to some down trees/boggy area. The trick is to not put back in as soon as you see water (coming from MCC) continue a bit further until you see the open wate...

Re: Gear/Tips for fishing Isle Royale

So my two cents. It's hard to fish from shore, but I have heard of people having luck at Chickenbone. I carry Cabela's Fish Eagle® Travel Spinning Rod. (not a commercial just the one I have) it's a simple four section travel pole. I have 6 pound fancy braided something or another on the smallest spi...

I have the Cabela's Harvester Pro five tier. It works fine, but a bit noisy. I would buy it again.

Re: Canoe Route/General Advice

Ingo has good information. I won't repeat the same. I support every thing he says. speaking just about the portages: Two years ago I went from Belle Isle to Lake Richie canoe camp in one day. It was an achy day, but hours wise it wasn't terribly long. You have plenty of time for weather days. (befor...

Re: Itinerary Advice - Early May (First Boat?)

Welcome. Your trip would normally be a good one. Some longer days, but your experience indicates that you could handle it. The concern is with winter blowdown. If it is heavy, you may have some struggles getting over and around things. I think the initial focus of the trail crews is around Rock harb...
