Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

the elephant in the room that the survival of wolves on the Island will almost certainly require intervention from time to time. When I picked up my permit at the Mineral King ranger station in Sequoia National Park last August, the ranger on duty delivered a riff on the 1964 Wilderness Act, which ...

Re: May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th

I second Pictured Rocks as consolation hike to consider. About 40 miles of the NCST travels through it, hugging the shore of Lake Superior, and there are shuttle services if you don't want to backtrack. The NPS site is pretty informative: https://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/backcountry.htm

- (re)Fillable cosmetic tubes or tottles for small quantities of liquids or lotions. I got frustrated trying to find small tubes and bought a bunch of 1/2 oz refillable tottles. Have used for camp soap, vaseline (fun to fill :? ), suntan lotion, bug dope, Go for it, love to hear your ideas! I do th...

Re: First Timer's Gear List

It looks like you have all the bases covered! This isn't going to shave much, but ... do you need both the knife and the multitool? and could whatever information is stored on the survival cards be carried on your phone instead? Or are the survival cards doubling as recreation? (So far none of the g...

Re: Itinerary Advice - Early May (First Boat?)

I took the first (tourist) boat out of Copper Harbor last year, and share your attitudes toward cold weather hiking strategies. I agree that the wildcard is deadfall. But one way to look at that is: the more time you spend struggling through blowdowns, the less time you'll spend shivering at camp!

Re: Canoe Route/General Advice

I haven't got any advice, since (other than a solo foray onto Tobin harbor in a 2 person kayak) I've never paddled, only walked. I'm hoping that I'll be bold enough to try paddling the island some day, so I also hope you'll keep us posted on your 10th anniversary ISRO paddling project!

To add/keep?: --the gaiters! Even if you never encounter mud over 6 inches deep, they'll make tying and untying your shoes a more pleasant experience. -- maybe trekking poles. One of their unsung benefits is that they prevent sausage fingers. --a wool watch cap or beanie, and possibly lightweight gl...

Re: Vegan Backpacking Food

A close reading of the 2018 trip log suggests that Tortuga's lost 40 pounds since last visiting IR. You're going to be flying up the trail no matter what you eat! Good-to-go (a lot of which is available at, ahem, REI) has vegan options: https://goodto-go.com/collections/food/vegan . I've tried only ...

I've used Frogg Toggs, and can contribute the following very limited intelligence: --they run HUGE. Think David Byrne's big suit from Stop Making Sense. I bet they'd fit over your boots. --their colors are pleasingly ugly. --I never actually hiked in them. As luck would have it, no significant rain ...

Re: Itinerary Advice for cadenparulski

This is my first time going a big solo backpacking trip like this- I have adequate hiking and camping experience and I am in pretty good shape, but I would still like some feedback on my planned itinerary. It's not really one I've seen in any of the research that I've done. I plan on taking the Isl...

My usual: a national parks annual pass! Any excess gets converted to darn tough socks. (I'm not mature enough to sit on unspent REI dividends.)
