Re: May 2018 First Boat Runcation (West side)

Awesome idea of fun and awesome reporting on it! (And thanks for reminding me that I need to add "gravid moose" to the list of things I worry about.)

Also from the Greenstone--Mt Franklin, to be exact. (Sorry -- I've lost control over the technology that allowed me to embed photos. It's close to a carbon copy of sneaky monkey's.)

Re: May 2018 McCargo-Daisy-Moskey-Chippewa

Hooray for the season's first trip report, and a splendid one at that! Thanks! I especially appreciate the tips on mine and Chippewa Harbor exploration, since those are two places we're hoping to go in a few weeks. my moose question: the big bull on the Green Stone Ridge -- was he near the western D...

Re: Shorts vs Pants in June

I'd go with pants, due to bugs and (depending on where you are) brush. (And I'm an inveterate shorts -- well, actually skirt -- wearer.)

Re: Rock Harbor Lodge early season

That's nerve-wracking! They told me earlier this spring that the lodge opens June 5. I guess the housekeeping cabins gear up earlier? Anyway, here is the contact information that came with my reservation (which leaves it pretty ambiguous how to contact the outfit in May): Please phone us at 866-644-...

Re: Ranger III Reservations

I emailed (attaching a .pdf of the reservation form) in February. They emailed back the next day telling me to sit tight because they weren't processing reservations until March. About a month later, they emailed me a reservation confirmation. I think the Ranger wranglers are the same folks who staf...

Re: May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th

I second Pictured Rocks as consolation hike to consider. About 40 miles of the NCST travels through it, hugging the shore of Lake Superior, and there are shuttle services if you don't want to backtrack. The NPS site is pretty informative: https://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/backcountry.htm

Re: First Timer's Gear List

It looks like you have all the bases covered! This isn't going to shave much, but ... do you need both the knife and the multitool? and could whatever information is stored on the survival cards be carried on your phone instead? Or are the survival cards doubling as recreation? (So far none of the g...

Re: Itinerary Advice - Early May (First Boat?)

I took the first (tourist) boat out of Copper Harbor last year, and share your attitudes toward cold weather hiking strategies. I agree that the wildcard is deadfall. But one way to look at that is: the more time you spend struggling through blowdowns, the less time you'll spend shivering at camp!
