Re: First time to IR - a couple of questions. TIA!

[/quote] What time do you recommend starting the canoe trip to make ferry at 2:45? Is it safe to leave the canoe to hike up to LL? It took us (who are mildly experienced at both aspects of this biathlon) about 3 hrs to complete the Tobin Harbor Canoe/LL hike combo a few weeks ago. This included abou...

Re: Future IR Adventure for Noobs

You sound like you're hooked! I bet you'll get lots of feedback, so just a few thoughts: --keep trimming the pack weight! You can go a long way toward that just by learning (maybe via a series of shorter trips) which things you really need, and only bringing those. I suspect extra clothes and uneate...

Re: First time to IR - a couple of questions. TIA!

More water taxi considerations: The Greenstone between the Mt Franklin junction and Lookout Louise is plenty nice. But I think the stretch just west of there, between the Daisy Farm junction and the Mt. Franklin junction---most of which it looks like you'll be walking---is more spectacular. It has m...

that looks like a terrific plan -- only I wonder whether the flooding made getting to IR as much of an adventure as being there! Please report back to let us know how it went.

Re: NPS officially moving forward with introducing new wolves to IRNP

I took the Ranger III back to Houghton a week ago today. The natural historical entertainment was provided by a passenger: Rolf Peterson, who issued an update on the wolf reintroduction. He's not an official directly involved in it, but he's a very, very interested observer. This was a week ago, I d...

Re: TR 6/18: RH; CH-McCC-RH

Yep, the "ancient miners" really did just stop mining. When Europeans first encountered the Ojibwe, they knew of the copper pits (had oral traditions about them) but didn't actually mine them. Nobody knows why. To solve that problem would be to answer an awful lot of questions about the ancient his...

Yes, that geographically challenged person was me. Maybe we should wear nametags! in my book, no one who knows where the Superior charts are is geographically challenged! I know of other online outdoors communities that adopt conventions enabling their members to identify one another in the backwoo...

Re: TR 6/18: RH; CH-McCC-RH

Geo-Heritage tours: an excellent thought! Mr t was also waaaaaay into the Minong mine --- so something that combined boats, rocks, mines, and animals would be just the ticket. Concerning mines, we developed one of those questions which can divert backpackers for miles: the copper pits dug by indigen...

Re: June 25-30 plan

it sounds to me like you've got this! Which way around Chickenbone: the mileages on the Nat Geo map make it look like McC to Your Cove is 2.6 miles SHORTER if you take the east chickebone (northern) route. I've gone both ways in the last 13 months, and might prefer that route on aesthetic grounds as...

Hooray, Grandpa---you know your ships! I'm wondering if our paths crossed. Could you have been the other person scouring the chart of Lake Superior in the snack bar after the wolf-moose talk, trying to find Caribou Island?

Re: TR 6/18: RH; CH-McCC-RH

Did Mr t do OK on the backpacking pack, or is he "never again"? And did Rolf say anything about the timing for reintroduction? Mr t: this is his second backpacking trip. On the first one, which was two nights but in a park (point reyes) with splendidly appointed back country sites, he'd begin each ...

I do the same---I fervently hope the institution of TRs survives pressure from social media to reduce everything to a briefly captioned snapshot!

TR 6/18: RH; CH-McCC-RH

Departing from past practice, this time I brought a walking mate: my husband (Mr t). He’s a stalwart hiker and a devotee of the Canadian shield. But he’s reluctant to backpack, due to his fierce love of furniture, especially toilets. So the format of this visit was a lodge stay punctuated by the sho...

Keep trying! This past week was the first one the concessions on IR were fully operationally, which might have made it an unusually busy time for the home office.
