Re: TR 8/4-8/9 2017 [Backpacking] [Video log of RH, 3M, MB, MCC, DF, RH]

Hooray! In the dead of winter, I'm occasionally reduced to riding my trainer (essentially a stationary bike) for exercise. I pass the time watching youtube videos of hikes I wish I could be doing. Now I've got this and Feldtmann loop (so far!) to look forward to. Thanks!

Re: Solo Trip in Late September

The part of the GRT you'd miss by doing 1 or 3 isn't its most enticing, unless you're really into looking at forests from the inside (which sometimes people from the southwest are!). A slightly longer variation that would incorporate most of the highlights of 1 and 3: follow 1 to Daisy Farm, then he...

Re: TR: 8/5-8/11/2017 [Minong: McCargoe > Windigo + Hugginin] Dad / Daughter Trek

manways: that's an extremely useful concept, and "manways" is an agreeably Middle Earthish name for it! I'll take solace in knowing how to describe what's happened to me next time I lose the real trail because I've wandered down a branching manway by accident . . .

what an adventure! Thanks!!

A question about a term in the background section: what are "manways"??

Re: Camping overnight at Moskey Basin or McCargoe Cove?

you can't lose. The stretch of the Greenstone Ridge you could take if you targeted McCargoe (Mt Franklin junction to jog north to McCargoe) is spectacular, but so are the trails you'd walk to (and from) Moskey Basin. I've stayed at Moskey and only walked through McCargoe, so I'm not an ideal witness...

Re: Which Itinerary?

they both looks great! Itinerary 1 has you spending a night at an inland lake--those campsites have a different vibe from the ones along L Superior. And since the day from CWB to Moskey Basin is short, you could slip in a dayhike up to McCargoe (~ 5.5 m RT), to check it out (and maybe the mine, too)...

Re: Windigo to Windigo 7 days/6 nights

I'm envious of your itinerary -- it follows a lot of trail I haven't seen yet! It also omits my favorite part of the Greenstone, which is the ridgewalking east of the Chickenbones. I think the only sane conclusion to draw from this is that you'll have to come back for more! But have you considered t...

Re: A couple quick questions (toilet paper and showers)

Could you stash a real towel, soap, and a change of clothes (and whatever else you need to celebrate at trip's end) at the Rock Harbor Lodge while you're on your walk?

Thanks for the report! I didn't know there were famous McCargoe butterflies. Is the basis of their fame just that they're reliably present at McCargoe or do they have further claims to fame? (They must be tough if they're surviving the weather you're describing . . . .)

Re: Advice/Suggestions on First IR Trip

if you're feeling perky on the 23rd, you might want to consider taking the "long" way from WCB to DF, following the GRT to the Ojibway fire tower before cutting down the Mt Ojibway trail to your campsite. That way, you'll add a really nice ridgewalk to the day's itinerary. And the fire tower is natu...

Re: Moskey Basin or Daisy Farm campground?

I slept at MB my first night out of RH in May, and really enjoyed both the site (unbelievable sunrises) and the walk there from Daisy, which feels kind of ridgy after all the shore hugging. If you're still feeling chipper when you got to Daisy, go for it! It might help with still feeling chipper to ...

Re: Rock Harbor to Windigo in 2.5 days on Labor Day Weekend - Advice on Itinerary

Just to muddy the timing estimates: I have a similar packweight and mileage appetite to the OP, and my camp-to-camp average pace on the GRT last year was around 3 mph---which surprised me, given the rules of thumb I'd read going in, and given my "usual" pace, closer to 2 mph, on rockier trails with ...

Re: Trail planning, early August

I did a stint on the Long Trail Patrol when I was a whippersnapper! Some of the waterbars near Little Rock Pond are my handiwork. Whichever section of that trail you backpacked, I'm guessing you'll find yourselves well prepared for paths on Isle Royale.

MI-based UL gear cottage industry!

Who knew? https://www.swdbackpacks.com/product-page/long-haul-50l-ul-backpack I know nothing about the merchandise -- I just stumbled across the website and liked the idea of midwestern ultra-lighters. (I think you can see Isle Royale in their logo!) Has anybody had any experience with their product...
