Awesome report! I especially enjoyed the account of the moose encounter and the idyllic trail beyond. Thanks!

very cool trip and report! Now I can add "being stalked by a moose" to my growing list of things to fear on the Minong . . . .

Re: TR 9/5-9/11 2017 Windigo to Rock Harbor

Thanks for the report! The holstein made me giggle.

I'd just begun to think I was ready to try the Minong when I read about the guy who encountered water 4 ft deep. That's roughly my chin! Is that representative of dam-impacted trail conditions, or was he way off course?

I haven't walked either stretch but I'm curious about both -- so I'm following!

Re: TR: 1Sept-6Sept 2017 [RH to Windigo to RH]

Thanks-- that is some excellent coverage. I love the moose video! Sorry about the soggy feet. I usually walk in trail runners and dirty girl gaiters (which you might want to check out if you're looking for light and snug: https://dirtygirlgaiters.com/ ). I've learned to use waterproof hiking boots a...

Re: Hidden Lake to Lane Cove

Congratulations on the water taxi! It'll be cool to motor around Stoll Point. I tried to arrange the same taxi ride last year, but proved inadequate to the logistical challenges. This means I got to walk between Lookout Louise and the Mt Franklin junction in *both* directions this year. It's smooth ...

Re: Hidden Lake to Lane Cove

It might be easier/quicker/more efficient (than arranging transport from rock harbor to hidden lake dock and walking to Lane Cove from there) to head directly to Lane Cove from Rock Harbor: take either the Rock Harbor or the Tobin Harbor (quicker) trail to the Mt Franklin trail, then up and over the...

Thanks! Somewhere in that list there must be the geniuses who are fabricating gear out of upsydaisium . . . .

Re: TR: 8/16-8/20, 2017 [Minong Ridge: McCargoe > Windigo]

Thanks for the great report! I also shudder to think how many wipeouts I'd have without trekking poles (this even though I usually have a wipeout or two due to tripping over my poles!). And give my regards to the Iron City--I was a grad student there too, back in the 80s, when the riverfronts still ...

Re: Itinerary for 9-4 to 9-10 Feedback/answers

Sounds like a terrific trip! the restaurant/grill: I don't think reservations are needed. I'm not even sure what the mechanism for making them would be! kayak: I had a blast kayaking around Tobin Harbor, looking (futilely) for otters and checking out the islands, camps, and almost-ducks. You could p...

Re: MI-based UL gear cottage industry!

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a full-suspension version of the 35L -- IN PURPLE. I agree that the extra capacity of the Long Haul is worth 3 additional ounces, all other things being equal. What tips the balance in my case is that I'm pretty happy with a ~50L pack I have now (Osprey Exos 58, w...

Re: Solo Trip in Late September

Looks awesome! There are other terrific options -- I personally love Lane Cove and the walk to and fro, which is an object lesson in evolving beaver impact -- but that's a reason to plan a followup trip!

Hooray! In the dead of winter, I'm occasionally reduced to riding my trainer (essentially a stationary bike) for exercise. I pass the time watching youtube videos of hikes I wish I could be doing. Now I've got this and Feldtmann loop (so far!) to look forward to. Thanks!

Re: Solo Trip in Late September

The part of the GRT you'd miss by doing 1 or 3 isn't its most enticing, unless you're really into looking at forests from the inside (which sometimes people from the southwest are!). A slightly longer variation that would incorporate most of the highlights of 1 and 3: follow 1 to Daisy Farm, then he...
