Re: June 16th-23rd hike trip route planning

I followed the Greenstone from Windigo to Rock Harbor (with side trips to Hatchet Lake and Lane Cove) in that window in 2016. At first I picked my way around scattered and isolated muddy bits. Between Chickenbone and the western Daisy Farm junction, I encountered some extended wallows --- and found ...

not quite IR and not quite moose, but still . . .

To protect its remaining members from banquetting wolves caribou herd is airlifted from one Lake Superior island to another:

Re: Trip Report July 12-18, 2017

thanks for the awesome detailed report! For food storage, there's a compromise that's almost irresistibly well-named. Ursack is a line of soft-sided (reputedly) bear-resistant food storage bags. (I've never used one -- they're not on the list of approved bear canisters in jurisdictions where I hike....

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

I really loved both the walk to and from, and the camping, at Lane Cove. There aren't shelters there but there is peace (or at least there was when I was there).

I'm envious of 10 days on the Island, whichever itinerary you wind up with. And I'm looking forward to the video miniseries!

Re: Planning my second trip, first was about 9 years ago...

last year I took the first boat (open to the public) over from MI, May 8. It was awesome! Not deserted, but really quiet. Some (hiker-oriented) notes --There was still some snow and ice on trails--not enough to require traction devices, though-- and banks of it along the Superior shore. One day it e...

Re: when/why does freezing damage water filters

Thanks for the pore report! I now feel better about the filter I got last Xmas (and slept with on IR in May). As for other matters: As for your followup question that will come at any moment :D : Altimeters (aka Pressure altimeter) and barometers are essentially the same thing, mechanically. They wo...

when/why does freezing damage water filters

This was prompted by watching UPS people leave packages on people's freezing cold front steps yesterday morning. I'm guessing cargo holds are cold too. The kind of water filter, like the sawyer squeeze, you're not supposed to let freeze -- does freezing during shipment damage it? Or does the damage ...

Re: Planning a 8 day adventure... looking for some advice

It sounds like a great trip! And by the time you get to Windigo, you'll probably have a good sense of how fun/manageable it would be to return to Rock Harbor via Chippewa Harbor or Moskey Basin. Due partly to awkward campground placement, such a return would involve longish days, e.g. Washington Cre...

Re: IR-rich blog

Heh, glad you liked it! I never posted a trip report here and thought I shouldn't just link to my blog. I love reading trip reports, so I'm easy to please -- but I think your blog is extra-terrific. I for one wish that people who filed trip reports on their blogs would link to them here. I feel lik...

IR-rich blog

maybe if you've found this forum, you've already run across this blog. (Maybe one of you writes it?) It's got some delightful accounts of Isle Royale trips. If (like me) your hankering for trip reports grows as the winter deepens, check it out! http://blog.dcclark.net/2017/08/isle-royale-2017-saga-b...

Re: Reintroduction of Lynx

I would love to see a lynx in the wild! One of my favorite pictures in my guide to north american mammals is of a lynx hunting in the snow. The article says, and I've seen it said elsewhere, that the Island's original charismatic megafauna were caribou and lynx. Did the latter hunt the former? (I ca...

Re: More on Algae blooms

Got it! And here is where I confess that I hadn't linked the names either of the poison or the bacteria to the name on the color printer cartridge, which I hadn't (ahem) realized was the name of a color. (I figured they'd made up "Cyan" because Crayola had trademarked all the real words for blue and...

Re: More on Algae blooms

Thanks. And: Yikes!

Would it be wrong for me to infer from the name of the bacterium implicated in these blooms that the poison in the lake is cyanide, or something like it?
