Re: sock debate

I like Injinji merino wool sock liners with Altera llama wool socks over them. I'm guessing any good wool sock over injinji would be a great combination. I have some seal skins, but have yet to try them, would like to hear what others experience is with them as well. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapata...

Re: help with trail option

I can't speak for July, but the EC trail is one of the prettiest trails on the island in May in my opinion.

Re: Landing a kayak at Chipp. Harbor?

As I remember, you should be able to get around the dock and up to shore. May be a foot or two deep with the higher water. Hopefully someone will chime in with more specific info.

Ride to hidden dock

I will be getting to the island May 20 in the morning. The water taxi does not start service until the 24th. By any chance would anyone be in the position to give me a ride over to hidden dock? I will pay for the ride. Thank you!

Re: This or That? Which Itinerary for Windigo to Rock Harbor

If you are experienced, the views and campsites are much nicer on the Minong than the Greenstone. It's always a good idea to plan for bad weather on the rock, so be prepared if you get delayed on the island. Just a thought, but if you are going into Windigo. How about continuing on to McCargo and hi...

Re: Canoe rental?

Have you thought about buying a used canoe? May not be much different than renting, depending how long you have the rental. You would have a boat for future trips or sell it. Just a thought (:

Re: Hiking Shoes?

In the last 3 years I've hiked 80% of the island including the Minong wearing boots. This year's trip I'm switching to mid trail runners. As mentioned above, wear what is comfortable to you.

Re: Feedback on May 27-31 Hike

Base654 has a lot more experience and thought of some things I didn't. The only thing you might consider would be to lengthen your stay if you can fit in the time. I've yet to meet someone that didn't wish they had more time on the island [emoji4]

Re: Traveling with small children and Seniors

Ingo always has great information. The only thing I could add would be to utilize the Voyager to drop you at different campgrounds. You could carry plenty of gear and food to keep you comfortable with minimal carrying distance.

Re: Figure 8 hike

In my opinion, May is the best time of year to do the Feldtmann loop. Last year it was so cool to see the views that you wouldn't normally see when all the foliage is on. I was set to do it the year before, after doing the Minong, but after talking with all the hikers coming off the loop, decided to...

Re: Opinions on itinerary for mid-May 2019?

If you're use to hiking the whites, definitely do the Minong. You won't have any difficulty with it. Views are far superior than the Greenstone.

Re: Input/Feedback Needed!

If you took the sea plane to Rock Harbor. You could catch the Voyager the next day to Windigo. Then catch the Ranger back to Houghton. You could also use the sea plane as a shuttle to Windigo. The sea plane folks are great to work with. The only draw back is that the plane is more effected by weathe...

Re: Better to visit in early May, or late August

You really can't go wrong with either time. The lack of green up in May allows for views that you won't get in August. Also cooler hiking weather, likely no mosquitos and less people.August generally not a problem with bugs. Water is definitely inviting for a swim. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk

Re: Figure 8 hike

I've done both loops and like Ingo's suggestion. Strangely I found the climb from the bay up to Island Mine more difficult than anything on the Minong. I did Loop in May, it was an awesome experience. If you can, I highly recommend May. The lack of green up, allows for spectacular views. Sent from m...
