Re: Article about IR wolves

I agree. It's thoroughly researched, well-written and impartial. Thanks for calling attention to it.

Re: trail runners?

I encountered my first trail runner in 1997 on Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain national Park. It's not my thing, but I can't say they bother me. Nevertheless, the question is legitimate. Our local nature center prohibits running so as not to disturb people who are doing nature study, birding or just e...

Thanks for an exceptional report. Our son was nine on our first trip together. He's now 42. We have many great memories of our trips together through the years. It's good to see that you had a good experience together. You're quite right that IRNP feels like home.

Strategies for Seniors

Isle Royale is by & large a young persons' park. The rugged trails and the requirements to keep moving make it challenging for seniors. I'm the same age as Hillary Clinton & Donald Trump so I'm not ready for a rocking chair just yet. But I have made some of the following concessions to old age: • Li...

We spent our first night on Isle Royale in 1982 at this campground. I've been hooked ever since!

From another "Lurker". This is too easy for the veterans, but it's still one of my favorite campgrounds.

Adding Rock Harbor Lodge to your itinerary

The last few trips, I've stayed at Rock Harbor Lodge the last night of a backcountry trip. I've found that the pros and cons are: Pro: - After sleeping in a tent with no shower, a real bed and a real shower feels heavenly. - When things are busy, you have a guaranteed place to stay; no need to arriv...

Re: Nemo Hornet vs. Big Agnes Fly Creek

I tried the Fly Creek UL1 but ended up getting the Copper Spur UL1. I find the side entrance on the CS is much easier to us, it's free-standing and it's much roomier because the walls are more vertical. I've been using it now for the past 3 years. Weathered some heavy rains with no problem. One cave...

Re: Submissions for PICTURE OF THE WEEK go here

Who planted this garden? Normally, I can't say I'm into wildflowers but I really enjoy seeing them on our IR trips. It's interesting too the way they change with the time of year.

Ranger III Special Rate

According to the park staff, they have set the dates for 2017 for the "Birthday Special" rates on the Ranger III. Rates are half price (Round trip for the price of a one-way ticket) if a round trip is scheduled between June 13 and June 24.

Ranger Replacement

Of possible interest. This updated report regarding replacement of the Ranger III came out in March, 2016 but just came to my attention.
