Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

I haven't seen it noted anywhere on this thread so: I have taken IR seaplanes 3 or 4 times and I love them; I will be traveling with them this year at least once, but... keep in mind that you might not get there at the time you expect and might even be a day late. On the return trip you might have ...

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

Cool! I think you'll be glad you did. We loved Isle Royale Seaplanes too.. great, professional outfit. I forgot to mention that you can have a fire at LTH... that was nice for us as it was the only one we had. Site 3 has a generous ring of logs, plenty of downed stuff to find, and previous hikes le...

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

The section from MCC to LTH I would call medium difficulty, with the most westerly part close to LTH being the hardest. The 5.7 from LTH to NLD starts the hardest part of the "ups and downs". There are not many switch backs... you go straight up and down. Our average speed was lower from LTH on. If...

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

If I had 9 nights I would definitely do an end-to-end, in either direction. Last June I took the boat to RH, camped in 3-Mile, Moskey basin, Lake Ritchie (with lunch stop detour to Chippewa), Todd Harbor, Desor S., Washington Creek. My favorite campsite was Todd Harbor, with Moskey a close second. ...

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

You make a valid point about not wasting the opportunity and doing the end to end. We have definitely decided that we will be doing RH to Windigo. Saving a loop style hike for another time. I jotted down your plan idea Base and I will check my map tonight. Thanks for all the info. And yes there will...

Re: Leftover Fuel Questions

 haha. Hooky, I like the idea of a twig stove (no purchasing fuel, no concerns about waste, etc) but I lack patience needed with the twig stove (esp on wet damp days). I like an instantly lit and hot stove. :)

Re: June Trip

Sounds like a blast and a unique way to visit the island. What is your backup plan if the weather is bad (delays with taxis and ferrys..)?

10 days / 9 nights route considerations

Ok folks I am in the planning process for trip #2 to the island. This year we are planning on taking the seaplane in and out of the island (last year we took the rangerIII). I have come up with a rough plan for our itinerary and am looking for advice. Some thoughts about us: we are experienced hiker...

Leftover Fuel Questions

Hey all, I am in the process of planning our second trip to the island and I have a few questions. This time we will be doing 10days/9nights on the island and taking the sea plane into RH and out of Windigo. Our expected date of arrival is July 29th. We were wondering, after our trip is over is ther...

Re: Asking for plan “B” advice

Jbone! Sounds like a unique fun trip for you and your family. How about adding in a zero day where you just chill at camp? This will give you an extra day to play with if schedules dont mesh. Or as suggested above the water taxi's could be of use to you. There were a lot of fish jumping in the water...

Re: Hammocks

Check out Shug on youtube. He is the hammock guru. Sintax77 is another youtube hammocker. You can learn a lot just from watching them. I personally am a ground dweller so I dont have much else to contribute.

Re: when/why does freezing damage water filters

If water gets into the pores of the filter and freezes it could expand the pores and allow larger particles to pass through "unfiltered". I also pulled this directly from the sawyer website: (this is the filter I use so I am referencing this) "Before initial wetting Filter is safe from freezing temp...
