Re: Hammocks

Check out Shug on youtube. He is the hammock guru. Sintax77 is another youtube hammocker. You can learn a lot just from watching them. I personally am a ground dweller so I dont have much else to contribute.

Re: when/why does freezing damage water filters

If water gets into the pores of the filter and freezes it could expand the pores and allow larger particles to pass through "unfiltered". I also pulled this directly from the sawyer website: (this is the filter I use so I am referencing this) "Before initial wetting Filter is safe from freezing temp...

that's the conclusion we came to but we were not sure. Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for confirming.

Shelters

Just curious, why are there no shelters on the interior of the island? Noticed on our last trip that they are only on the campgrounds along superior.

Re: Bugs???

We were there in early August and saw very few. I only applied bug spray once in 6 days. My guess is you'll be fine. Take a little spray to be on the safe side but I doubt you'll use it.

Thanks for watching!

We were quite happy we finally saw a moose. Everyone we passed had seen one (most near the chicken bones and Moskey).

I'm already planning a trip back. Can't wait to get back out there. So many more options for trails and campgrounds.

Re: MI-based UL gear cottage industry!

Packs look super sweet. I love the color combos and size customization. The last thing I need is another pack but these look pretty awesome.

Hope they will help pass the time! I love watching hiking videos of places I would rather be! We post quite a few videos of other trails as well.

Thanks for watching! I'm glad it will be able to help others. That was the idea behind all the hiking videos I do. There are very few IR YouTube vids out there so we thought this would be a cool trip to document. Feel free to share as much as you want! Thanks again.

The link below will take you to a video log of our trip to IRNP. We had an absolute blast. We took a lot of advice from these forums and want to say thanks. Stats and such can be found in the video descriptions. Please let me know what you think. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaiLw0gcGPvZPJ...

Re: Anyone have a recent berry update?

saw some over ripe thimble berries and under ripe blueberries over the last week. There were some blueberry bushes that were fully loaded though so they should be ripe soonish.

Re: Camping overnight at Moskey Basin or McCargoe Cove?

I liked Moskey better personally, but McCargoe isnt bad either. If the boat ride is rough and you are not feeling it maybe you can do the shorter mileage day on day 1 (moskey) and save the bigger miles for the next day.

Re: Duck ID

Ok I was hoping someone would say goldeneye. That was the closest I could find in a waterfowl ID book. Hard to tell from the pics. I will have the video of them up soon, but they were quite small. Id say half the size of a grown mallard.

Re: Food storage in campgrounds

When we were at a tent site we did a typical bear hang because the squirrels and foxes were always hanging around camp. In the shelter we could hang inside with ease. Had no issues doing it this way.
