Re: Feldtmann Loop vs Minong

I did the Minong last summer from McCargo to WIndigo. It is preferred in that direction due to the 3 beaver dam crossings on the last 7 miles to Windigo. We did our last miles over those beaver dams and our boots were extra soaked and heavy.. not a great way to start the rest of the trip if goign th...

Isle Royale Queen Reservations - Filling up

This is from Captain Ben from the Isle Royale Queen FB pages "Folks: We want to give you a heads up about getting reservations. We promise you: we're not playing any tricks here to get your business. But here's the thing. We have taken a lot of reservations so far this year. A number of days have al...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2018 Edition

I’ve got a 4 day trip on the NCT in western Michigan in early may. Trail food is the only thing I’m missing. The store in Northville is nearby and normally has a good selection; I’ll make a trip there in a week or 2.

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

Cool! I think you'll be glad you did. We loved Isle Royale Seaplanes too.. great, professional outfit. I forgot to mention that you can have a fire at LTH... that was nice for us as it was the only one we had. Site 3 has a generous ring of logs, plenty of downed stuff to find, and previous hikes lef...

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

.... So this leads me to want to do the minong instead of the interior west side of greenstone. When you say "hard parts of Minong" what exactly do you mean. I mean, I know you are referencing the northern part of the island along the minong but how hard is hard ? We are pretty experienced hikers a...

Re: NCT / Mantistee, take 2 -- make that take 3

One more change in plans. I'm doing part of the NCT in Manistee in May, but because of time constraints, I needed to cut down drive time and moved further south. I'm hiking the 40 miles from 11 mile road south, ending up in Croton. Lowered my gear weight a lot in the last few months, time to try it ...

Re: I'm Coming Back!!

Sounds great, get your "fix"!

I think early middle may would be an ideal time to do the minong.. more water in 6 mile creek, less undergrowth to fight and.... NO BUGS. I plan to do it again some day, and it will be in May

Re: Leftover Fuel Questions

I used my esbit as a hobo stove more than I thought. The key was birch bark. Layer of birch, stuff in the twigs and it lights right up. Cooks fast too.. but a little more to clean up.

We offered our extra fuel to other campers coming in at the end. They gladly took it.

Re: First Trip: Hammocks, Huginning Loop, August 2018

We camped there last summer. We went through the same pre-trip hammock concerns.. and you'll be able to hang there. You need to make sure to avoid birch/small birch trees for your hammock as they can pull up. However I used a birch > 1ft diameter at several sites, I just convinced myself that they w...

Re: Hammocks

The big 3 are hammock with mosquito netting that fits, straps to hang it and a tarp you trust to keep you dry. I used a Moskito Kakoon from byer this summer on isleroyale. Having the built in mosquito netting was important on IR in the summer. At +6'5", it was easily long enough for me. I got their ...
