When I was there 3 weeks ago the trail was in pretty good shape. I'd say boardwalks were in "average" wear state. We definitely saw much worse boardwalks on other parts of the island.
There were some washouts on the switchback sections going down shortly after the Mt Franklin junction.

TR: 7/18-7/24, 2022 [Hiking] East End
Just a few quick observations until I have time to write out a proper report. Self-registration is a godsend. I collected the least amount of micro garbage on this trip so that made me feel good about my fellow man (Except for 3 Mile; I picked up enough bits there of fill a Ziploc sandwich bag.) Few...

July 18-25
Mosquitos were terrible on the whole east end of the Island. The most mosquitos I've seen anywhere in 15-20 years. Rock Harbor trail between Three Mile and Rock Harbor was about the only clear place.
Black flies in abundance at Moskey and Chippewa

Re: Zero day options: Todd Harbor or McCargo Cover and Why
Second Bobcat1's thinking. If it were me I'd also stay at Todd for the seclusion aspect. 2 days into a trip I'd be happy to never see another soul, not have to listen to a group of 20+ people sit on the dock and chat all afternoon/evening. Most of the shelters and the 3 individual campsites are set ...

Re: Lake Richie algae bloom
hikers have to carry two days worth of water, or hike extended distances between good water sources, leading to less hikers doing an end-to-end hike? If someone is set on doing an end to end hike (which it seems like a lot are, especially the large number of people coming recently just to say they ...

Re: First Trip Itinerary Help.
We hiked about 30 miles on the trails and we didn't see many people except on the last day to Scoville only because I think alot of people on our ferry were completing that as their last hike before departing. That's good to hear. After the overcrowding of last year I was apprehensive about going t...

Compare and Contrast: Lane Cove to McCargoe vs. McCargoe to Lane Cove
I'm contemplating where to fit this journey into my trip. I've hiked all of the trail in question at one point or another so I know what to expect from the terrain. Starting at Lane would be day two of the trip whereas ending at Lane would be day six. Is there a consensus as to which direction is be...

I would sell my soul for this option. Waiting for orientation is such a time suck.Just_kyles wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 7:51 pm there was no one doing an orientation and everyone had to self permit outside of the visitor's center.

Also, I don't remember there being a lot of water available for the first portion of the hike out of Island Mine, so best to fill all your water vessels in the Island Mine Creek. That was going to be my comment. Make sure you have enough water out of Island Mine as there is not really any quick pla...

Plan on it raining when you're there.
It's rained at least once and usually several days on every trip I've taken to the island.
I was on the island last fall with the drought and record high temperatures and it rained 3 of those days.

Re: Campgrounds Mich., Minn., Wisc.
Wisconsin: Some of the State parks are fully booked every year. I had a hard time getting dates I needed last year at some of the less popular parks. That said, when I actually got there they weren't as full as the schedules indicated. I think a lot of people reserved sites "just in case" ...

Re: Itinerary help for first timer...attempt 2
I was thinking of maybe going to Moskey but thought it may be too far Nope, not far at all if you're already at Daisy and IMHO the few extra miles hiked far outweigh spending a day in the Rock Harbor area. I'm all for a down day but 36 hours at the busiest place on the island is low on my list of t...

Judge Magney State Park?
It's not too far....20 miles.
EDIT: Its also a nice place to spend the day for those left behind.

I second all of dcclark's coments. I did basically the same route as you have planned. We got to Lane cove at about 4pm and there was only one site left. If you want to experience Moskey I would suggest planning on getting there for the night. A day hike from Daisy isn't bad but in my opinion there'...

Re: Feldtmann loop or not
Honestly I liked Island Mine as a campground better than Feldmann Lake. I found Feldmann cramped and most of the sites small. The lake is nice for sunrise and seeing animals but there's not much "beach" or places to relax like the big lake sites. It was also full of leaches when I was ther...
