Re: First time on IR backpacking-trail advice

If you're coming from MN you could also do the Feldtmann Loop on the west end (about 30 miles). And if that's not enough, add the Huginnin Cove loop at the end (+10).

Re: [Tool] Isle Royale Trip Planner Spreadsheet

I am new to using this type of spreadsheet. I am doing something wrong. I want to go 8/18-8/22. I am not following any trail but I want to see if landing in rock harbor going to camp 13 hiking to 18 the next day, 6 or 5 the day after that and hiking back to he harbor on the 22 is doable. But I can'...

Re: Fishing/Hiking w/9 year old son

If you're comfortable in a canoe, your can spend a week on Rock Harbor and Moskey Basin without getting bored. I've done it twice, once unintentionally due to an injury and once purposefully because portaging was an issue. Caribou Island is a great campsite, and you have the mainland ones too. I can...

I saw the cleaning guy take a mop to the showers later and his water looked like chocolate pudding.
I used to have to clean those showers--worst job ever!

I use a small Ruffwear doggie bowl for sponge baths (weighs 1 oz). Or a larger collapsible Seattle Sports bowl on canoe trips.

Re: Are the showers and laundry open by mid May?

Maybe, if you're lucky, but don't count on it.
R.H. store opens 5/25, Windigo 6/5. They'll sell things early (including showers) if/when they have things working and are not otherwise tied up getting opened up.

Below is a picture of Daisy Farm from a 1963 postcard.
We rented out those wooden boats at R.H. in 1979. Heavy and slow, but very seaworthy. Same white and orange paint. But folks usually preferred the newer aluminum ones so they didn't get rented much.

Re: Shelters

A little off-topic, but another thing that's changed: my Uncle flew into McCargoe Cove and Siskiwit Lake in the 50s on a fishing trip. Remnants of a dock on Siskiwit still exist.

Velcro straps with D-rings, "Sport Wraps" https://www.rei.com/product/848430/redpoint-sport-wrap-package-of-2 . The D-ring allows you to pull it back on itself and get it tight, or use as a compression strap. Use on tent, poles, sleeping pad, cook kit, etc instead of stuff sacks, and also great for ...

Thermarest's z-foam seat pad. Great for the canoe, fanning a fire or needing a soft clean spot on the ground to sit on. $15 2oz https://www.rei.com/product/829881/therm-a-rest-z-seat-pad And you can buy a whole z-pad and cut it up into 4 z-seats--costs even less if you need more than one (works gre...

- (re)Fillable cosmetic tubes or tottles for small quantities of liquids or lotions. I got frustrated trying to find small tubes and bought a bunch of 1/2 oz refillable tottles. Have used for camp soap, vaseline (fun to fill :? ), suntan lotion, bug dope, I do this too, but not for the DEET, out of...

Light and Cheap, under $20

Since there's been a few threads lately on gear and weight, I thought I'd start a thread to share ideas. I'd like to focus on simple, creative ideas and keep the "under $20" in it and avoid a broader discussion of (expensive) ultra light gear--there's plenty of that all over the web. So here's some ...

Re: First Timer's Gear List

Bummer that the shop won't be open. We would be at Washington creek around June 2nd - 3rd.. I'm surprised it wouldn't be stocked then! Official opening is June 5. So likely they'll have something, but you're taking your chances if you count on real food. Last year (6/2-3) they had a summer's supply...
