Ranger IV Design Contest

This would be fun, but you have to be in school: https://www.nps.gov/isro/getinvolved/ra ... ontest.htm
Given that we're the same age, I hope that I don't get phased out soon, and that someone redesigns me better if I do  .

Re: trail runners?

Coincidentally, this popped up on my FB feed: Hiking - "I don't like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not hike! Do you know the origin of that word 'saunter?' It's a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land...

Re: TR 9/5-9/11 2017 Windigo to Rock Harbor

Thanks for the report Stephen. FYI, after Labor Day (and before 6/1 I think), the campground stay limits don't apply. There were a couple groups doing that in R.H. last Sept.

Nobody has made any suggestions regarding our itinerary, so I am hoping no suggestions means it looks good.
Thanks again!

Re: Itinerary for 9-4 to 9-10 Feedback/answers

Without rain pants or gaiters you may likely have water running down your legs and into your boots, even with a heavy dew. If you do stick with ponchos, hike in shorts and save your dry pants for warmth in camp. You can't rely on being able to dry things out. I use a 35 deg bag and light silk liner ...

Re: Boating Question (Bass Boating to the Island)

Getting ready for my trip this coming Friday, leaving from Grand Portage, MN Where is a good place to park my truck and trailer for the 10 days that I'm on the island? Rex, I'm assuming you'll be launching from the Grand Portage Marina http://www.grandportage.com/marina.php . From what I've seen th...

Re: Greenstone Ridge Trail - Water availability bn South Desor and Windigo

I don't remember hearing of anyone not being able to get any water at Island Mine. But I have heard of folks having to dig a hole in the stream bed. There's also a 3rd stream just past the campground from the ridge--that's what they have marked as the water source for the CG. All three were running ...

Re: Duncan Bay Narrows from Lookout Louise

Very bad. Cliffs, straight down (and presumably back up). I've read about a bushwack from the Duncan/Tobin portage to the narrows and that alone was very rough--very thick underbrush along a steep rocky shoreline.

Re: Freeze-dried foods at Windigo and Rock Harbor stores?

Alas, during the week of labor day in 2014, they were out of ice cream. Sadness hung thick and dank in the air. My understanding is that they get one supply of frozen foods each year and aim to sell out before they close down for the winter. They do resupply occasionally during the summer. But they...

There is no longer a grill at Windigo :( . Packaged sandwiches and frozen pizza in the microwave only, assuming they haven't run out.
Bummer. Sandwiches were a welcome treat after several days on the trail. Do they sill sell ice cream?
Yup! Still have ice cream :).

Re: Food storage in campgrounds

I leave my food bag in the tent. Use a dry bag and pretty much everything inside is in ziplocks, if not original foil pkgs (e.g. Mt House). Hanging it won't stop the squirrels. Only time I had an issue was when a squirrel chewed a hole through the tent door netting, through the canvas Duluth Pack, a...

But the store will make sandwiches and serve soft drinks (and sometimes ice cream) which you can eat on the porch.
