Re: not quite IR and not quite moose, but still . . .

It's been suggested that those wolves be moved to Isle Royale, but it appears that wasn't going to happen soon enough for the Caribou.

Re: Late May trip to the island

Last year I went over to Windigo on Memorial Day and they were working on opening things up. Odds are good someone will be there and sell you some fuel even if they aren't officially open yet--stocked could be an issue, but I'm pretty sure they store it over the winter there having bought a rusty ca...

Re: June 16th-23rd hike trip route planning

Can anyone answer what we can expect for wet trails on the routes suggested that time of year? We thought that some of the outed trails might be pretty wet in June which was another consideration for keeping to the middle. Obviously it all depends on the weather, both while and before your trip. Bu...

Re: Advice from Isle Royale magnets, t-shirts, and sweatshirts

Hi Ingo, The snowflake t-shirts were kind of slow sellers. I checked with Kristine and her reply was: "Not now. We do get occasional requests for them and may bring them back eventually." Bob Thanks Bob, that's kinda what I figured. I guess my tastes are atypical :? . I'll keep my eye out, and won'...

ARRC wrote: Another thought would be to one night at hatchet then to Todd and then to McCargo. That was my thought too. Skeeters could be very bad that time of year, but they're always worse on the inland lakes regardless. It's a short easy hike from Hatchet to Todd, so you either do 1 night each, ...

Re: 10 days / 9 nights route considerations

Here's 8 nights, for your consideration, all new campgrounds. Gives you 1 layover day, plus the option of skipping Huginnin at the end if you need/want to--remember the seaplane is the most affected by weather. Not too many shelters, however, but otherwise meets your criteria. Arrive R.H., presumabl...

Re: Leftover Fuel Questions

Leftover fuel: leave it with a ranger at the visitors center. They keep a stash for emergencies. Available fuel: can't imagine it would be a problem in July. Permit: you'll probably be met by a Ranger and walked to the visitors center to do your permit. That's what happened when I flew into Windigo....

Re: Ultralight canoes for Isle Royale

Try Sylvania Outfitters in Watersmeet, somewhat out of the way coming from Mackinaw. That's the closest I could find in the U.P. for a kevlar canoe, but fortunately it is reasonably convenient to my family's cabin. It was some years ago and I haven't searched recently, though. Broke down and bought ...

Ice Coverage

Ice cover for the Great Lakes is at 22%, about the same as 2014 when there was an ice bridge. Haven't found specific comparable numbers for just Superior. Here's a place to explore if you're inclined https://www.glerl.noaa.gov/data/ice/#currentConditions . This current chart says 28% as of yesterday...

Re: Asking for plan “B” advice

Ingo, I did look at the water taxi option, it’s only another $50 for the two trips. My questions with that are do they run every day, and will they get us to our destination if we are a day behind? Yes they run every day. You do need a reservation, which you'll make for a specific day and time. If ...

Re: Asking for plan “B” advice

Your plan seems to be well thought out and it's obvious you understand the boat schedules :). That time of year the odds of weather delays for the boats is low, but yes, in the worst case that the Queen stays in port and the Voyageur runs as planned, then you would have to change plans and probably ...

Updated link that forces you to make a copy first (which is required to use). Again, note that you need a Google account to use, since it resides on Google Drive/Sheets.

Re: Congestion

How many are in your group? If there's 7-10 then you must register as a group and camp in designated group sites--advantage being that you have a reserved site, disadvantage that you must follow your itinerary. If 6 or less, then it's first-come first-serve, but you can change your trip along the wa...
