Re: Freeze-dried foods at Windigo and Rock Harbor stores?

Alas, during the week of labor day in 2014, they were out of ice cream. Sadness hung thick and dank in the air. My understanding is that they get one supply of frozen foods each year and aim to sell out before they close down for the winter. They do resupply occasionally during the summer. But they...

There is no longer a grill at Windigo :( . Packaged sandwiches and frozen pizza in the microwave only, assuming they haven't run out.
Bummer. Sandwiches were a welcome treat after several days on the trail. Do they sill sell ice cream?
Yup! Still have ice cream :).

Re: Food storage in campgrounds

I leave my food bag in the tent. Use a dry bag and pretty much everything inside is in ziplocks, if not original foil pkgs (e.g. Mt House). Hanging it won't stop the squirrels. Only time I had an issue was when a squirrel chewed a hole through the tent door netting, through the canvas Duluth Pack, a...

But the store will make sandwiches and serve soft drinks (and sometimes ice cream) which you can eat on the porch.

Re: Drop off

If you are on the boat from Grand Portage, couldn't you leave a bag at the camp store at Windigo, for a fee, when you stop there? (Although in the period of time the boat stops at Windigo, I am not sure there would be time to run up and leave it.) I don't recall that they offer that service at the ...

Re: Itinerary for later this week

I haven't been to Desor, but would be tempted to substitute Huginnin Cove--beautiful spot on the lake.

Re: Boat transport AFTER 9-1

Not difficult or expensive using the Voyageur II. It is somewhat more than a round-trip ticket to R.H. because you'd be splitting up your return trip into 2 legs, however. Simply check their schedule and make your reservations for your drop-off/pickup locations http://www.isleroyaleboats.com/ . As E...

Re: GAle winds 8-3 thru 8-4

Good to hear! Have a great trip. Current wave heights are around 4' as you leave the Portage Canal and 2.5' out closer to Isle Royale, so it should be calming as you go.

Re: Arrival, Ranger III and other questions

1. They do registration on the boat. One advantage of taking the Ranger III. 2. With backcountry permits they expect you to camp where you say you will (within a zone). They don't give them for "just in case". If a CG is full, just politely ask to share a site--it's not a problem. 4. The Ranger III ...

Re: A couple quick questions (toilet paper and showers)

Those campgrounds will probably have TP, but no guarantee. They do supply them, but depends on busyness, timing, and whether people have walked off with it. There is hot water, but the supply is limited by the HW heater, shared with the laundry--so it tends to run out when it's busy. I'm guessing ea...

Re: Advice/Suggestions on First IR Trip

- I've seen posts about Island Mine CG being not as nice and that water can be sketchy? Any experience with this? It's all relative. I stayed there this spring and really liked it--a nice site in the woods, sits on a little ridge. The rangers should tell you if there's an issue with water in creek ...

Re: Advice/Suggestions on First IR Trip

Oh, hard to say (that's a good thing :) ). Todd Harbor is nice, great sunsets, but only 1 shelter. Love McCargoe too. And if you changed it up more and did Moskey, also a fav with great sunrises. I know, I'm a lot of help! For what it's worth, I do like the daily miles of your original itinerary, bu...

Re: Advice/Suggestions on First IR Trip

Sounds very doable to me. My only thought is that you might want to build in a layover day. That would probably mean dropping the Feldtmann loop, but you could add Todd/McCargoe to get back to the lake. Too many places I'd love to be and too hard to choose! Mud and bugs should be better that time of...
