Re: Need Advice; Planning a 5 night traverse

For a group I think you need to consider the lowest ability in the group--one miserable (or worse, incapable) person can make it miserable for everyone. For me, it's an aggressive trip--10 miles a day is about my limit, and I'm just happy with 5. But I'm not in great shape, older, and enjoy time in ...

Lakes' Richie and Intermediate, "canoe camps", are in different areas of the lake, than current positions.
Lane Cove also has moved. It used to be at the end of the canoe portage.

Re: First Trip: Hammocks, Huginning Loop, August 2018

Welcome to the forums! The Huginnin Loop sounds perfect for your trip. It's a beautiful spot and a great choice for a 1 night taste of the island! I did it a few years ago with an iffy knee, and while there are some ups and downs, it's not a terribly difficult trail. I'd highly recommend trekking po...

Re: Article about IR wolves

If you're like me and passed over this article thinking "it's just another regurgitation of the same old article I've read a dozen times," it's not. It has some interesting insights and is much more than so-and-so says this and so-and-so says that. And is much better written than most.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me. If you wish to comment on the proposed rates, here's the NPS site: https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/ ... -fares.htm

Re: Ranger III Special Rate

If daily distances are a concern with your inexperienced group, consider starting at McCargo and getting picked up at either Chippewa Harbor or Daisy Farm. Short days and great campgrounds. Heading for Windigo is great too, although the distances between campgrounds is longer (8 ish mile days).

There are 2, located on "road" that goes to the right of the pavilion as you come off the dock. It kinda wraps around up behind the visitors center.

Is this special rate something they typically do every year? And if so, does the return trip also have to be within the specified window? Does the island end up being more crowded during this time?
I believe this was a one-time deal to celebrate the boat's 60th year of service.

This would be fun, but you have to be in school: https://www.nps.gov/isro/getinvolved/ra ... ontest.htm
Given that we're the same age, I hope that I don't get phased out soon, and that someone redesigns me better if I do  .

Re: trail runners?

Coincidentally, this popped up on my FB feed: Hiking - "I don't like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not hike! Do you know the origin of that word 'saunter?' It's a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land...
