Re: 6/17/2018 Folks taking the Queen

Also, coming from Duluth is problematic. US 2 is closed near Ashland, and additional closures on US 53 and US 63. Just heard from brother who is pretty much stuck near Ashland trying to get to Duluth.

Reading "hopefully wheels will turn quickly" when reading about the government doing something, made me laugh out loud
I went to the Optimist Club that day  . The more realistic part me is thinking fall 2019.

Re: Where to stay?

I think seeing moose is kinda like what they say about catching a butterfly. Seems like the harder you try the less likely you are to see one. Be quiet and attentive, and just go out and enjoy what the island has to offer--with or without moose. Odds are you'll see at least one, but if you don't you...

Re: Lockers for rent in Rock Harbor?

No lockers, but the lodge office will store it for a fee. Ask them when you (finally :() make your water taxi reservations. No food or fuel allowed.

I love reading your TRs--I may have to get you to write mine next time (I'll just let you make up the details) :D. Did Mr t do OK on the backpacking pack, or is he "never again"? And did Rolf say anything about the timing for reintroduction?

Re: Water Taxi Reservations trouble

It seems that every year someone has a similar experience, but things get resolved in the end. Patient persistence seems to pay off.

Re: BUGS!

Ditto to all comments. Also, black flies are more attracted to darker colors so go with the light shades. I can attest that at Whitefish Point my wife's dark blue jeans were literally covered with flies, while my khakis had only a few (neither were treated)--although they were sand flies. Some gear...

Re: BUGS!

Prepare for the worst, that's prime skeeter and fly season (and hope for the best). My 3 point strategy: (1) Headnets absolutely--cheapest insurance you can buy :). (2) Treat clothing with Permethrin before you go (I don't always, but that time of year I would). (3) Picaridin or DEET (30% +). I've g...

Re: Chippewa Harbor or Moskey Basin

There are five in our group, so we’ll keep an open mind. I was mostly concerned with making changes with the water taxi for a different drop off point. I’m not going to change anything and play it by ear. If the weather is bad maybe we try to get a shelter at Moskey. If it’s nice and the skeeters a...

Re: Boat options from Grand Portage to Rock Harbor

Hmmm, Aug 23rd is a Thurs and the Voyageur II goes out on Mon, Weds, and Sat. I agree with IncaRoads on the Ranger III, but it goes out on Tues & Fri. Which leaves the Queen IV out of Copper Harbor--larger and more comfortable than the VII and runs every day (in Aug)--also the quickest boat ride to ...

Re: NPS officially moving forward with introducing new wolves to IRNP

Ideally it will be this fall. They say they'll close the park to do the releases, so if it doesn't happen then not sure what it means for next spring/summer. So hopefully wheels will turn quickly and the first will be in the fall.

Re: [Tool] Isle Royale Trip Planner Spreadsheet

The waypoint junctions use the trail names on the NG Trails Illustrated map. FWIW, I too get confused sometimes, but usually have a map handy (on my office wall, or next to the recliner at home). For campsite to campsite distances, you can also use this chart https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/u...

Re: June 25-30 plan

Sounds like you're in shape to do it. Be aware you're going in what could be prime mosquito and/or black fly season, so bring headnets and bug dope. The inland lakes (Richie and Chickenbone) can be particularly bad, so you may want to reconsider lake side campgrounds instead (Moskey/McCargoe). Depen...

Re: Chippewa Harbor or Moskey Basin

Both! Chippewa night 1 and Moskey night 2 (over Richie). Otherwise it's kinda like asking who likes strawberry or peach ice cream better :). Personally I'd go Chippewa, but everything said is true so you can't go wrong. re boaters, I've had only 2 annoying experiences in many trips, less than with o...
