Re: Flash floods and washouts in Houghton/Hancock area

This will only show US and MI state routes I believe, but it shows M26 near the seaplane dock now open. US41 south of Houghton is 1 lane each direction.

Re: First time to IR - a couple of questions. TIA!

Are there PLB's for rent available? Is is absolutely necessary to bring a PLB? Some people bring them, but I don't think most do. Personally, going into the woods with some risk and being self-sufficient is part of the experience for me, but it's a personal decision. When I went solo I considered i...

Re: First time to IR - a couple of questions. TIA!

*** day 1 - which is the best route - along tobin OR along rock harbor? Most folks recommend the Tobin Harbor trail because it's an easier trail. The RH lakeshore trail is rather rocky, although more scenic. Coming off the boat with full packs, probably go for the Tobin Harbor side, definitely if i...

Re: Feldtmann Loop questions

Here's a video I made of my trip last year--there's a long and short version of the same thing. It was May and probably as wet/muddy as you would likely see. Later in the season you should expect the trails to be more overgrown, particularly between Siskiwit Bay and the Feldtmann fire tower. https:/...

Re: Feldtmann Loop questions

Windigo -> Feldtmann: 1 up and down, about 200' elevation, otherwise flat. Feldtmann -> Siskiwit Bay: 1 up and down, about 500' elevation, flat on top of the ridge and either end. Siskiwit -> Island Mine: Flat, then about 700' up. Island Mine -> Windigo (Washington Creek): 700' gradual downhill all ...

Re: June fishing inland

In theory I can fish the inland lakes first and then go into Lake Superior, just can’t go the other way around right? That's my understanding, but I would confirm when you register--or call before hand. Lake Richie and Chickenbone are your best bets. Now I just need to be ready to hook something wi...

Re: BUGS!

Ingo, Wbat do you mean by "melt things"? I picked up some deet, pretty strong stuff. DEET interacts with some plastics, vinyl, and other synthetics--dissolves the surface and makes it sticky. Will also take ink (like labels) off things. It's usually OK once it's dry though. I usually rinse off my h...

Re: June fishing inland

For what it's worth, as a bad fisherman I've caught fish from shore on the inland lakes, and none from a dock on Superior (one in a canoe). Figure if I can throw a spoon in and catch something, anyone can :D .

Re: First time to IR - a couple of questions. TIA!

Agree about E Chickenbone--it appears you're trying to shorten the day to Lane Cove. My thought is: Day 3: Moskey to McCargoe Day 4: McCargoe to Daisy Farm Day 5: Daisy Farm to Lane Cove While the hike up to Lookout Louise is nice, I don't think it would be worth a water taxi just to do it, especial...

Also, coming from Duluth is problematic. US 2 is closed near Ashland, and additional closures on US 53 and US 63. Just heard from brother who is pretty much stuck near Ashland trying to get to Duluth.

Re: Where to stay?

I think seeing moose is kinda like what they say about catching a butterfly. Seems like the harder you try the less likely you are to see one. Be quiet and attentive, and just go out and enjoy what the island has to offer--with or without moose. Odds are you'll see at least one, but if you don't you...

No lockers, but the lodge office will store it for a fee. Ask them when you (finally :() make your water taxi reservations. No food or fuel allowed.

I love reading your TRs--I may have to get you to write mine next time (I'll just let you make up the details) :D. Did Mr t do OK on the backpacking pack, or is he "never again"? And did Rolf say anything about the timing for reintroduction?
