Re: Voyageur II and Queen IV schedule

You should plan to stay a night at Rock Harbor (or another nearby camp.) The Queen and Voyageur II are not normally scheduled to be in port at the same time, and thus don't hope for a miracle... There are many variables; mostly on how many stops the V-II might have (McCargoe Cove and Belle Isle) and...

Re: Duck ID

Doh. Tough call with the low light and no reference to size, but if they were diving about and given I've seen adults at Moskey before, they might be immature Goldeneyes. There might be a faint patch of white on that third one, but other than that no great plumage to date.

Re: McCargo or W. Chickenbone

Under most circumstances, I'd typically answer "McCargoe Cove" right away. It's an awesome camp; and compared to Chickenbone West it offers better water access, a dock, a community fire pit (and area to meet other hikers), shelters, and then the hike to the mines. There is just more to "do." However...

Re: First time back country camper. What to bring to Isle Royale?

Welcome to the forum, AdamisAngry. Thesneakymonkey provides good observations and if you've camped before, backpacking just changes the "should I pack it" with a weight and space consideration. Afterall, you need to carry everything with you. One note, however - If your water purifier works on UV si...

Thanks for the TR & the pics. I'm still trying to figure out when (if) I'll make it this year, and this provides some great inspiration!
(Personally, I kinda love 40s in July. Call me crazy.)

Way to go, Fonix. Makes me want to apply for one of the future years... Not only for the opportunity to give back to the Island I love, but also to get an up close experience with Rock of Ages.

Re: Advice on itinerary - late August

Given your limit on time and willingness to water taxi, I think you have a great hike planned. A few notes: Day one: Since you should have time, be sure to take the Stoll Trail out and back. Great intro the island. Day two: As you come in by taxi, you should see the "old school house" (not really) a...

Re: Feedback requested

Welcome to the forum! A couple quick thoughts: August 28th - The requisite "take the Tobin Harbor trail and cut over at Suzy's Cave" advise applies; it just makes for an easier start. August 31st - Any reason you're zig-zagging at McCargoe Cove? There is a trail direct from McCargoe to Chickenbone E...

Glad to hear it went so well! It's so amazing how Isle Royale can go from "too much sun, need to find shade" to "way too cold, need to find sun" in a matter of hours.
Here's hoping you can add your names to the list that make Isle Royale the "most re-visited" National Park.

Re: Trying to plan a first time canoe/portage trip

Which, Ritchie--east or west, is "the canoe campground" ? The western campground on Lake Ritchie is commonly referred to as "Lake Ritchie Canoe" since it's only accessible by water. The eastern campground is accessible by trail, as well. New topic: in your opinion, do I need a canoe flotation devic...

Re: Solo Kayaking inland lakes.

I would say the most common inland water route, because of the way the ferry (Voyageur II) works, is as follows. Bodies of water listed. (* = Has a campsite available.) McCargoe Cove*-->Chickenbone**-->Livermore-->LeSage-->Ritchie**-->Intermediate*-->Siskiwit-->Wood*-->Whittlesey*-->Chippewa Harbor*...

Here. I'll point out my favorites. Or at least my brother-in-law will. :D Daisy Farm #10. A classic with great beach access. DaisyFarm.jpg Moskey Basin #3. Great flat "lying out" rock. Beautiful view. MoskeyYouAreHere.jpg McCargoe Cove - Tough call, I like both #5 and #6, they set up a little higher...

Re: planning a trip and have questions about difficulty

re: ferry- one leaving 15 mins later and one leaving 15 minutes earlier is going to cause either of the operating companies issues? Actually, I think it's all because there is only one official dock for ferries in Rock Harbor, and they have to share it. Therefore, they both can't be docked at the s...
