Re: TR:6/16-6/23 2018 [Windigo-Isle mine-Todd Harb-Mcargo-Threemile-Rock Harbor]

Excellent TR. Glad to got to have a close up moose encounter on your first trip. I can't think of another National Park that makes that opportunity so available. (And in June, they are generally docile and just interested in eating. I've had them walk right past, browsing along the way, not caring a...

Re: Trailfinding/Navigation (August)

All of the trails you will be on are well tread and easy to follow; there is a portion of the Feldtmann trail West of Siskiwit Bay camp that has been a bit overgrown the past couple years (maybe a crew finally got there) but other than that, just follow the trail in front of you. The trail intersect...

Re: Where to stay?

I have a personal theory that some moose (more than the normal amount) would hang out near Rock Harbor (and Windigo) during earlier years when the wolves were more predatory than now, with the reason being that they learned or could sense the relative absence of danger. Your theory is backed by con...

Re: Chippewa Harbor or Moskey Basin

Wait. Why not East Chickenbone?!? :P I vote for this: Both! Chippewa night 1 and Moskey night 2 (over Richie). Then you get TWO great campsites. The hike from Ritchie to Moskey (and back the next day) is really not that bad (it can be a canoe portage) and the extra time is worth the camp, IMHO. Ritc...

Re: Shelters

Has anyone seen shelters of the Isle Royale design at any other parks or locations? We have not. Just kind of curious to know how unique they are to Isle Royale. I think I once read they are a four-sided variation of the "Adirondack lean-to" found on the Appalachian Trail in the Adirondack mountain...

Re: Shelters

You can see on the National Geographic map of the park, all the campgrounds with existing shelters have been carved out of the wilderness designation, which allows the park service to maintain and replace existing structures in those areas. I like the theory, but I'm not sure it's 100% true. There ...

Re: June fishing inland

I'll let others chime in if they've ever saw them get that big, but given the volume and size of the northern pike in many inland lakes, I think many of the perch get consumed as baitfish.. That said, I know I've watched them swimming (along with sunnies) at Ritchie in the past. Hopefully you can ca...

Re: June fishing inland

Short answer: Yes. For Chickenbone, both the West campsite, as well as the trail over to McCargoe offer plenty of places where you are along the shore and there is enough open space to cast. For Ritchie, there are several places, especially on the more eastern side of camp, where shore casting works...

Re: May 2018 McCargo-Daisy-Moskey-Chippewa

Woohoo! Thanks for a great start to the 2018 Trip Report season! I love reading other's experiences on the Island, and yours is no exception. Glad the weather and trails cooperated. I recall one of my first trips to the Isle in the 90s when the moose population was high, and the repeated need to sto...

Re: Aurora caught on webcam

Yeah, Occam's Razor would say that, too... Here's where motion from the camera would help, to see if they're dancing. While they solar activity has been low, there are blips. There was a G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storm at that same time with Kp6, So it's possible. Only the moose and wolves will know...
