Re: NOAA study of plastics on NPS shoreline

Time to give up the Fleece? Maybe just quit washing it? I always thought the organic compounds released from various synthetic materials were far more dangerous than the micro-particles. I know the focus is on various life forms that ingest the micro-particles so I guess it's good we ...

Re: water taxi rates

I want to go to Lane Cove without Doubling Back. I wonder if you can book it at last minute. Since I am a solo traveler, I will last minute book on the Queen and it has worked well for me when I have a spare few days in summer. The taxi might be available last minute but since they take reservation...

Re: Ice Coverage

Yesterday, the camera showed mostly ice with the far shore open a bit. It's probably melting quickly but could also be blowing around a bit. Looking better though. I wonder what the float plane's requirements are, other than (or beyond) safety first.

Re: Have a day or two to kill on the UP before my ferry leaves, I need some sightseeing suggestions

Bare Bluff is spectacular. I finally made it 2 years ago, a fairly easy 2 mile hike. It's about 200 feet shorter than Hogback at roughly 1000 feet but it is right next to the Lake on a shear cliff, offering beautiful views. What kind of vehicle are you driving? The road to the parking lot off Smith ...

Re: Opening Day Weather

What does this mean for the May 14th Isle Royale Queen trip? Still business as usual? The plane lands in Tobin Harbor not the Rock Harbor channel. Tobin Harbor appears to still be iced in (per NOAA satellite imagery on 4/29. Rock Harbor seems more open. Even though the Mott Island dock is still ice...

Re: Ice Breaking Operations

According to Marine Traffic the 2 vessels are the NPS' small tug "Shelter Bay" and LCM "Angelique". Marine Traffic lists their destinations as Mott Island but it appears neither one has actually reached the dock yet, both a few hundred yards short. There's still enough snow on the ground they might ...

Re: Portage Distance

Since 2010 it has been listed in "The Greenstone" at 1.2 miles (including this years, 2018 Greenstone). In the 2010 issue it is noted that the portage was lengthened that year. I have seen documents older than 2010 that list it at 0.7 miles but nothing at 2.0 miles.

Re: Post Office

I don't see why not, as long as it already has the appropriate postage attached and meets postal requirements. I doubt Rock Harbor or Windigo are set up to weigh parcels and sell postage. It is actually the Voyageur that is the agent for the U.S. postal service. They're sort of like the local mail-p...

Re: First time Sept trip

Make sure you take your tent as you can never be guaranteed of getting a shelter although during that time of year the odds are extremely high, especially at Daisy Farm. I hope I didn't paint a gloomy weather picture. After Labor Day is my personal favorite season on Isle Royale. The cooler weather ...

Re: First time Sept trip

Unfortunately, the Rock Harbor Lodge concessions close this year on September 14th. This is actually one week longer than usual. This means no water taxi is available. It also means that the island visitor traffic will also be dropping off significantly. Daisy Farm is not as popular with many becaus...

Re: May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th

Snow mobile'rs are still out and about in several areas of the U.P. Even though, according to the DNR, the official season is over there is still a 2 foot base in some areas.

It looks like the Northern Lights but I believe that it is actually the lights of Thunder Bay reflecting off low altitude clouds. The recent solar activity has been at extremely low levels.
