Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

I stumbled across a Canadian website that monitors ice conditions on the Great Lakes (and the oceans). This is a map of ice coverage in lake Superior as of 2/18/2013. At least on this day, it looks like an ice bridge may be starting to connect Isle Royale to Ontario. http://gallery.leica-users.org/d...

Re: Bushwacking From Lookout Louise to Blake Point

I've never bushwhacked, but have kayaked around Blake Point several times. My observations from a kayak is that the tip of the island is incredibly rugged. Vertical drop-offs, lot of rock and a thick forest of spruce and balsam. If in a kayak and the conditions were right (calm) you could land close...

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

One of my favorite spots, although not the highest on the island, is the hill behind the campsite at Chippewa Harbor. You can see a large majority of the island and lake, and it's a great place to relax. It's also a short, fun hike from Chippewa Harbor campsite........ We stumbled across the bluff ...

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

.......Hey treeplanter: for that overlook on the minong, my map says there is a well in the same vicinity(also on the north side of the trail). Is it still visible/marked? I don't believe so. At least I don't recall seeing any sign indicating a well. We found this lookout quite by accident. We kaya...

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

The best panoramic that I've personally seen is off-trail. Take the Minong Ridge trail west out of McCargoe Cove campground. Go about a 1/2 mile and you'll notice a 50" ridge immediately adjacent to the trail on the north side. Scale this ridge (easy) and you'll be greeted to a spectacular view of t...

Re: Circumnavigating Isle Royale?

"Clapotis is a term kayakers use for reflected waves combining with the incoming waves in predictable patterns causing an area of disturbed water where wave height ...". It's not a term used by canoeists because they would be swamped in such conditions. I never knew there was a fancy name for "lake...

Re: Circumnavigating Isle Royale?

Personally, I would never circumnavigate the island in a canoe, especially in May. A sea kayak, yes, but a canoe? No way. Just note that the Huginnin-to-Little Todd stretch isn't the only shoreline to fear while paddling around the island. You can find long stretches of rocky, inhospitable shoreline...

Re: Origami Kayak

I've been following this boat for the past few months. Being a fan of folding kayaks, the Origami boat looks to be very interesting. I do wonder how sturdy it is though.

Re: Any recent trips to Sargent Lake?

I've always wanted to take my Klepper folding kayak to Sargent. It be no problem carrying the boat in it's bags and assembling once you were at the lake's shore. I just have to find the best route to get to the lake. Looking at an aerial photo, Sargent Lake looks to be quite the place to paddle.

Re: Best Time to View Fall Color

Thanks for the reply. I lived on Lake Superior (Munising) back in the 1980's and know that the Lake can influence when the trees turn color (with the shoreline forest turning color later than the forest away from the lake). Normally you can count on the aspen/birch across the lake in Ontario turning...

Best Time to View Fall Color

Does anybody have an idea when the aspen/birch on the northeast part of the island turn color? I'm contemplating a quick trip to I.R. in the fall and it be great to time my trip so as to see the aspen/birch in full color.

Re: Inexperienced Individual With Canoe/Kayak Questions

....I am a novice when its comes to water travel. Yes, I have rented a canoe before and taken on it on a state park lake. Yes, I have used my uncles canoe on the lake that rests behind his house. But no, I have never taken any classes or courses on canoing or kayaking. So, before I get way ahead of...

Re: Rain!

The island got 4" of rain. Apparently a 57" seiche was recorded at Windigo. A USFWS boat got caught under a dock when the water went out and ended up sinking. Also 70 MPH winds were recorded. The NWS called IR before the storm so they could get a warning out to people on the water. It will be inter...

Re: Rain!

No doubt the arrowhead of Minnesota, and Isle Royale, need the rain. The western Great Lakes, meaning lake Superior, have been experiencing bellow normal precipitation for several years now. All this rain flowing onto Lake Superior can only help the water levels. As for campers on Isle Royale, you t...
