Re: Jetboil Fuel Can at Windigo

I doubt any one will ever use that canister :?: (I would think the GAZ canisters would more likely be used by boaters); unfortunate, the LNT principles abandoned in two instances, out the door after less than ten miles from the orientation lecture. :( The LNT principle is designed to protect the re...

Re: Rock Harbor - 3 Mile - Daisy - Lane Cove - Rock Harbor : August 2016

Thanks for the great feedback! I'm glad I am not the only one feeling the IR Squeeze! I wonder if the increased traffic is a sign of the new norm. Perhaps with all the good press it's getting to be a popular destination. We did run into a nice couple from Seattle so the word is certainly getting ou...

Re: Seaplane

Please excuse me if this has been a topic recently. I am contemplating taking the seaplane to Windigo for the first time. Let me tell you why. I will be hiking solo for the first time on the island and am thinking because of the long drive I may be better off to skip the boat ride and try the plane...

Re: Newbies first trip to IR

Welcome Terry You will be ok on the island in regards to the campgrounds. All the shelters are first come first serve, but if the weather turns on you, people are usually friendly and will offer room to share. From what I gather this year in June there will be a short closure at McCargo Cove for rep...

Re: Novice Backpacker in search of a Solid Meal Plan:-)

Welcome to the group. As everyone has pretty much hit the nail on the head, If you choose to boil water, mountian house meals are the way to go. Pita bread holds up great in the pack as long as a hard cheese. Always bring one extra something in case the boat is delayed or you come across a hungry hi...

"Planet friendly Gear"

As it was an add in the last issue of Backpacker about planet friendly gear, it hit me that most of the posts on here for gear sometimes lean heavy towards brand new "awesome" gear. Now theres nothing wrong with this, but let me tell you a little story. (what im telling you is true, and I ...

at that same time I am also aware of news that the area could be heavy with helicopters bringing supplies. Just an FYI if anyone else has information on this please share! I rescheduled my trip for end of may so I could avoid this.

Re: Female Gear List 1st Timer Isle Royale

Hello As a solo female hiker, here's what I bring to Isle royale every year. I always have instant coffee "tea bags", enough for 2-3 cups of coffee a day breakfast: I use steel cut oats measured out in a ziplock enough for 1/2 cup a day. prevent the micro litter by doing it this way. In su...

Re: Female Gear List 1st Timer Isle Royale

Welcome. I would not leave gloves at home. I would also bring a winter hat, even a beanie type. We have come off the greenstone in august where it was 80 degrees and when we dropped down to the shoreline of superior it was a freezing 35 with freezing winds coming off the lake. a tent in the shelter ...

Re: 25% Discount on lodging for Isle Royale visitors

Hello
I choose a room for the night before. We grab supper on the way and when we get there we go thru our packs again and enjoy a hot shower with a drink and wake up refreshed. Ingo is right every year it rains!!! I don't want my initial backpackin gear to get wet right off the bat. Enjoy your choice
