Isle Royale National Park Makes Plans to Decarbonize
Interesting news about all 5 National Parks, Seashores and Monuments surrounding and in Lake Superior and their plans to fully "decarbonize". Here's the paragraph about The Island: "Plans call for 81 buildings at Isle Royale to be retrofitted for heat pump water heaters and LED light...

Re: Moose conference in Grand Portage
He said when he was tracking radio collared moose, if he ever found one dead at the bottom of a cliff, he would look up sure enough, there was always one of those trees overhead. Reminds me of a boating safety tip. Whenever search and rescue folks find the body of a lone male fisherman or boater th...

Re: Moose conference in Grand Portage
European moose aside: The natural history museum at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris has a famous stuffed moose sent to France's leading 18th naturalist, Comte de Buffon, by Thomas Jefferson, as part of their beef about whether everything in North America was paltry and weak compared to everything i...

Re: Moose conference in Grand Portage
Even after I clicked on the link and after seeing the title "North American Moose Conference" again, some part of my brain kept asking the rest of my brain...."I wonder how many moose will be able to show up?"

Re: TR: 5/25-5/29, 2022 [Hiking] [Windigo to Malone Bay via Feldtmann Loop]
Feldtmann Loop ending at Malone sounds like a nice yet a bit challenging route, especially so early in the season. Did you have a tent? My first impression was the garbage bag was your major cover? My estimate for the tree removal at South Desor was for safety reasons. Were they Birch (or maybe Aspe...

I also appreciate the nervousness of getting picked up by the VII--I've done it 1/2 dozen times without any issues but still get nervous about missing them, or them missing me! One more reason to carry a bit extra food, at least under these circumstances. Also consider taking a marine radio (even i...

Re: Bug net?
I would always carry a head net on the Island. Since they weigh so little, it's not worth the risks. Black flies will certainly be an issue at some time during your time frame. It all depends on temperatures not the calendar. Likewise for mosquitoes, although for me at least they are more tolerable,...

Re: 2022 ISRO Attendance
There's also the question of how, or whether, visitors to the Visitor Center in Houghton are being counted. I'm not sure what the categories mean, but "Recreation Visitors" might or might not include mainland-only visits too. This 2021 link provides a breakdown of Island vs. Houghton Visi...

Re: Rock Harbor to Chippewa Harbor in one day
I'm mentioning this in case you were relishing the prospect of the 17 mile walk from RH to Chippewa!) On a related side note, I'd like to challenge anyone to step off the Voyageur II at Rock Harbor and then beat it to the Malone Bay campground, 33 miles distant, for a pickup the next day. Or maybe ...

Re: Rock Harbor to Chippewa Harbor in one day
Unless I REALLY liked riding the boat up one side of the Island and down the other, that is not how I would spend the majority of the two days and one night I had available. An overnight at Huginnin Cove is a good idea but even camping in Windigo and day hiking to Huginnin and/or elsewhere would be ...

Re: Backpacking with a basecamp in the middle
I very much back dcclark's suggestions. You won't have the greater privacy that could be found at some other campgrounds but you will have a greater opportunity to meet some wonderful people. I can't think of any trails where a fall would result in almost certain death, but I haven't been on every t...

Re: TR: August 2022. What could go wrong?
Well, it was a great "adventure" to tell to the Grandkids. I was anticipating a story of how someone or their pack took a bath during the boat evacuation or transfer to the larger boat. Glad everyone made it out dry.

Re: Mt. Franklin Fire - many east end trails, Lane Cove & Three Mile closed
I'm not sure about the Ranger but the Queen and Voyageur can both dock at Daisy Farm. I would think that option would be utilized if the fire keeps up.
