Re: Trails could be tough in Spring
The trails this year were the worst that I've ever seen them. Andy, at times, it felt like those trees were trying to eat me. Sorry we didn't chat on the boat, I didn't see your actual name on here until after the trip. Also, I assume it was you guys who made the last entry from last year at the Ma...

Re: First Boat, Minong to Malone Bay
Thanks guys and John I don't think the temp difference was much of anything until I got right by the shore. But the next day, again right by the shore, was absolutely beautiful, until a front blasted in.

Re: First Boat, Minong to Malone Bay
jerry: I ran/walked it. And stopped for pictures and enjoyment. I'd guess two hours. Give or most likely take an hour. John: I didn't hear anything more. It made me curious to what kind of trap is used. I glanced briefly through Wolves of Isle Royale this morning and only saw a brief reference, no p...

First Boat, Minong to Malone Bay
First, I did not make it to the island last year, so I am grateful to the good folks on this forum for helping me daydream. Second, the window for this trip popped open quickly, so there was little planning involved, although I had been considering doing this route for awhile. Pictures are here: htt...

Re: Minong - West to East
I just got back yesterday from a west to east trip (my first time in that direction), although I went south at the Hatchet lake Junction. I'll provide a trip report soon, but my initial thoughts in response to your post are these: That first day to North Desor felt long, yes, but not overly so. On t...

Re: Trails could be tough in Spring
I just talked with Jasper yesterday and the cake has been ordered. Now just hope for calm water so we can all keep it down. I'll bring a fork! Looking forward to meeting you budducci. Not sure how long Kevinl will be sticking out there, but he's a good resource and will be going out. Thanks Tom. I'...

Re: Trails could be tough in Spring
Boat reservations are made! It's so fun to plan a trip on such short notice. I took a job today that I've been doing as an "interim" for the last few weeks, but I told them I'd need a week to play first. It's amazing how quick I can get (hopefully) everything packed--I guess that comes fro...

Re: Trails could be tough in Spring
erun, that's mighty fine advice John's handing out. Sounds like a fun trip, and I bet the fishing in Whittlesey wouldn't be bad either--I've always had grand luck there. John, I was actually considering leaving my pole behind because I'll be carrying so many clothes. I was thinking that might be my ...

Re: IR in Fall?
It's a beautiful time. Weather can be a bit unpredictable, but it's my favorite time to be there. The moose, if in rut, can seem loud and a little crazy, like teenagers in rut. Just bring some warm clothes and you can't go wrong.

Re: Trails could be tough in Spring
The window is opening and I'm thinking I could be on the first boat this Saturday. Never been able to go in the spring. Woo-hoo! Getting excited thinking about it. I'll try to leave a fish or two for you at Malone Bay, John, if I bring my pole.

Re: Trails could be tough in Spring
If I get the chance (work issues might open some time if I work it right), I might head up soon. Don't you always go early John?

Re: Please straighten me out re: my unrealistic schedule
Hi John. I don't have mileage in front of me, just memory and an internet map, so forgive me if my guesstimates seem off. Because you have such an early start on day one, if you get to Daisy Farm feeling good, consider continuing on to Moskey Basin--it's worth it. That hike to North Lake Desor will ...

You guys are awesome. Thanks for the info. I think I'm definitely hiking, always coming from Grand Portage.

Re: Any good shore-fishing locations?
Shore fishing I've found the best luck wading out a ways, past the reeds. There is a book called Fishes of Isle Royale. I think the Greenstone (annual park newspaper) lists what fish are supposedly in what lakes.

Re: First time IR trip advice
You should have no problem hiking end to end in 5-6 days on the island. You could do the Greenstone or the Greenstone and Minong, although that should take a bit longer. However, with that in mind, consider that getting to and from the island, depending on what form of transportation you use and whe...
